Hi i'm new to this site. I found a stray pregnant cat who is now in labor. I have a couple of question my first question is do newborns like about 20 minutes born after being born go directly to nursing or do they just wander around for a little.

Also the mama kitty has very dry nipples maybe that is why the baby does not want to nurse i am unsure. First time having a cat and never had a pregnant cat before. Thanks for all the help.

Newborns usually attempt to nurse fairly quickly. Please guide the kittens to nipples. How many kittens are there?

If mom is still actively delivering kittens, she may not nurse them until she is done.

You can put olive or vegetable oil on mom's nipples if they are dry.

Have you purchased kitten formula? You should get a can of powdered KMR and give mom a dish a day. You may need to supplement the kittens with it if they do not nurse well. Pet Ag, Royal Canin, and GNC are good brands. Avoid Hartz.

Mom also needs unlimited kitten chow and wet food while nursing.

it's extremely important for kittens to stay warm during their first 3 weeks, as they cannot regulate their own body temperatures during this time. momma cat, sibling kittens can help to keep kittens warm. you can also use a heating pad set on low and wrapped in a towel, placed in the 'nesting box' -- make sure that the towel-covered heating pad only covers part of the bottom of the nesting box, so if a kitten feels too warm they can crawl off the covered heating pad.

can you hold the kitten to your chest, to warm it up? you can make a warmer for the baby -- fill a sock with uncooked rice, then microwave it for a bit...try 5 seconds on high, then check it. make sure the rice-filled sock isn't too hot.

is the momma cat still in labor, giving birth to more kittens? has the kitten nursed at all yet?

just wanted to add that kittens should be warm to nurse, they should not be cold when nursing.

IF you will find yourself in need to give it fluids and nourishment,  you will need a needleless syringe (1-1,5ml) best, or a dropper, or even a straw.

Tummy down, head up raise a little diagonally up, and slowly in the corner of the mouth, dropwise... So it manage to swallow.  If it swallows well, it may go fairly quickly. Otherwise, it takes time and patience, at least till you get used to it.

If the kitten wriggles up, you can held it in a towel or even wrap it up alike a burrito.

OK, what to give; you got earlier proposals of different good kmr´s.   Goats milk is OK too.  Raw is best, but bottled / powdered works too.

If in a clinch, not having anything else at home in the middle of the night,  a little honey water with a shade of kitchens salt in, you can use it.  Perhaps even simply let the kitten suckle off your finger.

Let the fluids be body warm, but be sure they arent hot - be very careful if you use micro - shake vigorously after warming...

Burp after the feeding.  And help with eliminating if momma doesnt do it.

Good if you have a scale, so you know how much the kitten is NOW, and how much it is after 12 and 24 hours...  It shall add at least 6grammes a day, prefeably 10+ grammes.

As stressed earlier - the kitten must be kept warm.

Last but not least, please report now and then, even if nothing much happens.  We want to know.  And usually there is somebody here to help out.

Im wriing all this, because here is an air there may be complications - momma perhaps wont want to take it or something...   If so, you must act vigilantly and vigorously to give the kitten a sporting chance.

How are things going? Is it just one kitten? Is mom with the baby now? You may need to close them in a room together. Please make sure the kitten stays warm. Has it nursed?

Please update and provide answers to our questions so we can help you.

Hello everyone there is a female cat in heat. And I would like to know if the female cat will instantly get pregnant or not? Also she is a feral. If she were to be pregnant and if she were to still be in my backyard how long until I can spay and neuter the kittens. Also how long until I can spay her if she were to be pregnant after her kittens of course thank you very much for your responses.

You can perhaps spay her NOW?  As soon as her heat is over?   Or do you want the kittens?

Next question:  If you proceed with letting her having the babies,  will you have the momma and kittens inside?   If so, the usual is to  spay her at 8 weeks,  so you are sure the kittens wont need to nurse from her.  - Kittens can usually proceed to nurse even if the spaying is earlier, but whom wants risk any complications?

If she is an outside kitten, and you keep her and the babies outside, you must spay earlier.  There is a risk she can get preg ery soon after the delivery.  Cats arent protected by giving milk, unlike human women whom are somewhat protected.

There is actually two female cats who were in heat. One of them is in heat now. And there was one in heat a while ago the one I am going to take care of but I could not handle to take care of two pregnant female cats (if in case they both are pregnant. I already have two males one who is kinda a kitten neutered and the other one is about 8-9 years old neutered. So I might have to take one of the females to adoption.

If the one that was in heat before is pregnant I am keeping her and will keep her indoors with kittens. The other one I will take to adoption do you think they will harm her if she is pregnant (the one in heat now).

She will be indoors all day.  She is very sweet and I hope she likes being indoors. Thanks!

If she is in heat now she can be spayed now. She's not pregnant if she is in heat. Can you bring them both to the vet?
