Hi guys,

Some of you might remember replying to my thread in July (thank you) about my female cat who wasn't peeing and was just automatically given a shot of convenia.

TLDR: should I take my cat into the vet for bloodwork to test for anemia now that we are almost out of the 65 day window that the convenia stays in the system? (Convenia is known to cause anemia).

We are almost at the end of the 65 day window where the convenia lasts in the system, and my cat has started acting weird. Last night, she meowed excessively for hours. This behaviour isn't normal, and I'm hoping it's not because something is wrong.

My biggest fear over the last 58 days has been a reaction to convenia. Do you think I should get her tested for anemia? Just to make sure nothing happened? She's otherwise healthy right now...but the meowing had me concerned.

Thanks!

Maybe. You can't always tell if it is mild anemia. A cat with anemia will often have pale gums, and lack energy. My boy wurzel had it. In the end, he couldn't even jump on the bench, or scratch his post. It was heartbreaking. I hope your cat is ok.

Thanks for the reply. I don't want to stress her out, but I also just want to be sure. Is there any point in doing the blood work if her gums seem normal? I'll check them later today. I've just read so many convenia horror stories. I feel so lucky to have almost gotten through the 65 days.

Just keep an eye on her. If she seems lethargic, or has any other symptoms, then i would take her to the vet. Wurzel had hemolytic anemia. He was a stray, so not sure how he got it. Can get it from onions, garlic, paracetamol, etc. None of which he ever got from me. He may have had cancer. The blood work said possible lymphoma, which can cause anemia. Your cat should be fine if it is energetic, eating as normal, and not sleeping more than usual. Let me know how she is going.
