My MIL does enjoy restaurants, but it's getting more difficult for her to get around. She's using a walker all the time now and still falls quite a bit.

We ultimately decided on just cake and ice cream with a few light refreshments on Saturday afternoon at her facility and then in a couple weeks or so, we'll bring her down to our house and I'll make her birthday dinner then. Right now, it's too much with everything else that was going on recently.

It's much easier to do it at home too--no shuffling food anywhere.  I've always preferred just having family dinners, etc. at my house, than having to cook and take food elsewhere to be served.

It went well; it really went well. There were 14 of us, with the grands (and an old gentleman resident who opened the door to the Community Room at the facility, walked in, sat down and made himself at home
I had made some maple syrup sugar cookies and chocolate chip cookies. The grands dug right in....they are Cookie Monsters; they take after their Grandpa.
I mentioned the gentleman. We were all sitting in the Community Room. The door opened and this guy cruised on in. He was a resident of the facility. He came in, sat down, and said, "What's going on?" in Italian! Our DIL can speak some Italian, so they chatted. I gave him some cake and ice cream and he had a good time with us, I think. Rick's mom said he's been living there for quite a while and he doesn't get a lot of visitors. So he had us for visitors yesterday.

You are amazing!  I wish you were my sister-in-law.

I had a birthday party for my oldest Brother last Sunday.  Only five of us.  Sister-in-law who usually calls the shots decided it should be at my house because travel is hard for me and for years I was the one who had to do it.

She never thinks of anyone but herself so I knew there would be a problem.  She decided just cake and ice cream would be fine.  My niece made the cake and I had to shop for the ice cream and refreshments.

Party was scheduled for 2:00 they live 45 minute away.  My niece called her 20 minutes before they should be leaving to ask when they were going to leave because she wanted ti ride with them.  Her answer was "I don't know, church ran late and we just got to the restaurant".   Apparently she planned on feeding herself before the party.

They were almost 2 hours late and I have decided that if I ever see her again in my lifetime it will be too soon.

That sucks. When I had a house warming party, I had relatives on my husbands side that showed up 3 hours late and then complained that all the food was gone. Smh. Gee I wonder why?!

Thanks, guys! I really hope everyone had a nice time. We tried to make it nice for his mom and everybody who came. As for the older man, I think he had a good time, too. He was a real sweetie. He told one of the assistants that he had had a good cookie for his dinner. He told her he wanted another one, but he didn't want to be greedy (she told Rick's mom that's what she thought he was talking about). Bless his heart. I had offered him another cookie, but he wouldn't take it. I should have just given him a few in a little bag to take back to his room.

I'm sorry Cheshire Cat, about your party. Two hours late is not fair to everybody else. Kathy, we've had a situation similar to that, too. At our son and future DIL's family wedding shower, we were in trouble and didn't even realize it. We had a big picnic at a park about halfway between our house and our DIL's family's house. Lots of food, lots of fun. When it came time to pack everything up to come home, we all packed things away, stuck everything in our vehicles, and then came home.

A couple days later our son came up to the house. He wanted to tell us how rude he thought we were. And I'm sitting there, saying "What? WTH are you talking about?" Well, we didn't offer our leftovers to her side of the family! And they were very much offended! Son said they were downright peeved that we didn't offer them our leftovers. They said the best food came from "up north" and we were terrible people because we took it all home with us. Her mother and her grandmother thought it was horrible. And evidently, they were very serious about it. You know, I didn't even think about it....I wasn't trying to be rude or offensive or anything. I simply did not think anybody would want our leftovers. Who the heck wants leftovers???

And you can be very sure that , ever since then, whatever I take to a picnic or to a dinner down there does not come back home with us. I purposely take disposable containers with me, just so I can place any leftovers in that container and give it to them. Always. Doesn't matter what it is....I make sure I come home with completely empty containers.

I do the same now at every holiday dinner.  I save up butter bowls, sour cream containers, etc. all year long and buy a few sets of disposable containers so I can send everybody home with leftovers.  At Thanksgiving & Christmas, we will go to my MIL's house.  She is in her 70's and is determined to still have all holidays at her house (although I have to cook and shuffle the main meal dishes).  She loves baking and will cook 4-5 cakes and a ton of desserts, so I tell her to just do that.  She insists everyone take it ALL home, but she never has bowls.  And I don't want to haul all the food back to my house.  I always end up doing yet ANOTHER dinner at my house, usually the day after, for just hubby's siblings and whoever else shows up, so they can spend time together and reminisce about their dad (he has passed, and their mom is remarried).  I don't want all that food, my fridge isn't big enough.  I noticed the other day I'm sadly lacking in containers this year, so I guess I'll be going and buying some of those Glad containers.

What a blessed place we live in, that we have extra food.  I think of that often.
