We have two kittens out! One orange, and the second is an orange and white. They are having troubles latching, but from what I gather I shouldn't worry until after mom is done. I think they are having troubles because she never really lost any hair around her nipples it looks like. I tried helping them find one but they didn't latch on. The second kitten is crawling around all over the place... the first one cried a little now looks like she is sleeping... is that normal?

From what I've read yes it's normal most times they won't latch until momma has had all the kittens and is relaxing once she is done.....But I'm sure someone with experience will chime in and give you the correct answer.

Thats what I thought. Mom is relaxing now and letting them root around. The second kitten is actively looking for a nipple, te first one appears to be sleeping... which is why I am a little worried for her... Should I mix up some KMR and try to feed her a few drops? Or am I prematurely worrying?

How long ago was she born? I'd try and help her latch again if you can....I know from raising my goats that you want to get colostrum in to them right away and then worry if they aren't getting enough on their own or can't latch as well as everyone else. But if she was just born I wouldn't worry to much until you know mom is done for sure. Again I have very little experience with kittens just from what I've read on here so I'm hoping someone else with more knowledge will come on soon and answer for you. :)

The first kitten (the one I am worried about) was born a little over an hour ago. She might have latched and ate a little after she was born because there was a few minutes that I didn't see her. We will wait a bit and see. She just birthed number three so I am going to let her settle with it first then try to help them latch! I am glad she is comfortable with me handling them.

Prepare a little honey mixed in warm water. ie a thick honey water.   And smear it on the first ones lips and gum.  It gives Quick energy.  The glucose sugar in honey doesnt need to be digested, it goes into blood alredy from the lips and mouths.

If momma is very tired, you can give this to her to drink.  By the same reason.

Lets hope Everything goes OK.  Good you are observant and ready.

I missed the excitement! How are mama and kittens? Is everyone latching now? If not, it's time to supplement. Some kittens need supplementing for a day or two until they are strong enough to latch and suckle on their own.

Have you weighed them yet? Do you have a runt?

How is the other mama doing? Is she in the room with them?

So at 7:15ish this morning momma gave birth to a 6th kitten, who was still born. She is still grooming it so I am leaving it with her for now... Everyone else seems fine. Everyone seems to have to search for nipples a while before finding one because she still has all of her belly fur- its weird. I have not been seeing everyone latch, some of them are just snuggling... should I supplement just to make sure? I have not weighed anyone yet, I was getting out my scale this morning when she gave birth to the last one (?) and then it turns out my battery is dead :/

I think you should supplement. Can you get a new battery for your scale? Have you tried vigorously rubbing the stillborn in a towel just to make sure?

Do you think it is possible that she will have any more? The last one was a suprise, she had seemed to settle in with them. She screamed with each one. There was no way I could have slept through her birthing any of them if I had tried.

Poor kitty! She had 6. Let's hope that's it. She may experience after pains, which are milder contractions as the uterus shrinks.

Are the kittens nursing now?

I helped two of them find nipples and they are latched. The other three just act like they want to nap. I gave them 1 ml of formula, the boyfriend is out getting honey. Is 1 ml enough? Or should I try to supplement some more? I am hoping they perk up a bit and get stronger the next couple of hours, I work 2pm to 10:30pm today, the boyfriend will be home with them though.
