So i've decided to feed a 3-4 years old feral everyday because i find him too thin this year, compared to the other years where he was very robust. Oddly, his neck and shoulders are still broad, but not his lower body. This feral, let's call him Minou, is my cat's uncle, and most likely her father too. I knew him as a kitten, but could never approach him till i started feeding him daily. e has had human contact though, as the nighbors feed him through their basement windows and sometimes get to scratch his head.
For those of you who helped me when my Pixie was sick last year when i took her in at 5 weeks old, she is doing very well now and is living a comfortble life with me indoors. But her mother miscarried and died in the spring, and her uncle\dad Minou doesn't seem to be thriving anymore.
Long story short, i'm guetting a trap and the SPCA tomorrow. He will examined, neutered, treated for fleas and ear mites (worms too i reckon) and get his shots. All in one day. Not sure about how safe that is, so i guess that's my first question. Is that even safe? He will be released back in my yard the same day.
Me second questions, how dangerous is it for my own house cat for me to roll in the grass with Minou? He has fleas, and gods knows what else. He is VERY affectionate with me, rubs himself on me, head buds, etc. I leave my shoes out, but my cat has access to them when she come with me on my patio. I wash my hands when i get inside, but can diseased stick to my clothes? My cat has had all her shots last autumn. I dont treat her for fleas as she never gets in the grass or come near other cats. I use special dishes to feed the feral, but wash them in the same sink. Am i being a bit paranoid? I want to help the feral and enjoy our lovey dovey time together, but i don't want to make my cat sick.

Hi @Pixies Ma  Thank you for helping Minou.

My vet usually asks me to bring the cats to be TNR'd in first thing in the morning. He gives them a blood test, spays and neuters during his afternoon surgery hours and then gives them their shots the next morning, before I collect them to be released.

I think the anesthetic affects their body temperature, so vets usually wait until it's worn off before giving shots. Your vet will know what to do though. It can all be done within 24 hours.

I think ringworm and scabies can be passed from cat to cat if they share bedding or lie in the same places. It's pretty obvious if a cat has either of those, if Minou doesn't have any bald patches he's probably OK.

Fleas can actually hitch a ride into the house with you, but if you've never seen them on your cat chances are she doesn't have them. There is no risk to you or your cat just from washing the dishes the feral cats eat off in the same sink.

Good luck with trapping Minou, hope everything goes well for you.

If you wash your hands well when you come inside, you'll be fine. If you want to be extra cautious, change your clothes and wash the ones you were wearing. I used an old set of jog pants and t shirt whenever I interacted with new cats, just to be safe.

Thank you for helping him. It sounds like he needs a little kindness in his life.

Love the name.  I had a family member who called me that for years (as an endearment).  She was French-Cajun.
I'll tell everyone it's French-Cajun then. Sounds much fancier than French Canadian :)

I'm not sure they test them first, just give em a basic exam. I'll have to ask, but if they do test them, i don't think they proceed if they have leukemia or HIV. They put them to sleep instead :(

I don't have any experience with FeLV, but there's no need to have a cat PTS if they test positive for FIV. Once he's been neutered the chances of him passing the virus on to other cats is very slim. There's no reason a FIV+ cat can't have a long and healthy life.

If he does test positive and you decide to go ahead with his shots make sure the vet uses a killed vaccine so he doesn't suffer from any vaccine induced diseases.

A kitten I rescued last year tested positive for FIV, but she's very healthy in spite of this.

Sorry, i just saw this.
I have the option to have him tested for FLV and FIV for 25$, so i'll do that. I heard FLV has  much worst prognostic than FIV.
I have set the trap, and have a good week to get him used to eating in it. I'm just hoping all goes well and he comes out stronger and ready for winter. It gets so cold here....

Let's hope you can get everything arranged. I wish all the best to you and Minou.
