We talk to our trees in storms too and in general as we live in a forest and trees have the possibility of falling. My mother even persuaded one to stop leaning toward our house and to grow the other direction (it literally is growing a different direction now). We've been having moderate rain and wind gusts since about noon, but nothing dangerous. The pine tree across the parking lot has lost a few, small branches, but nothing big. More like big twigs. I've been out back several times to talk to the trees back there (OH STOP LAUGHING!), telling them to stay strong and hand tight through the storm. We'll see. They've outfaced more than one big storm in their lifetimes. These are big, mature trees. But it doesn't hurt to encourage them a bit (you're laughing again).
LOL...before I moved this past month, there was a tree that grew just outside my window. I used to open the window and talk to it all the time, especially during storms. They had to keep having aborists come out and trim back the branches, which were bending towards my window. I'm convinced it was due to our "conversations."

It's good that you can call the Marines. I have enormous respect for most Marines - ok, pretty much all of them but my ex-husband. I would trust a Marine before just about anyone else.
Just a quick update while I know I have power. So far, so good, although the worst of it won't be until later tonight. Does anyone know why these dratted things always hit at night? I have three canvas totes packed, one with supplies for Hekitty, one with non-perishable food for me, and one with a limited supply of clothing, my meds, and basic hygiene supplies. I have Hekitty's carrier out and ready. SHOULD I have to get the heck out of Dodge, I can do so fairly quickly. And, best news of all...Suzanne came over earlier, and a group of Marines came to her door a couple of days ago. They brought non- perishable food and some things like that, and left her a business card to call if she needed help, or was even just afraid. A Marine will be dispatched. This is because she already has her social security disability. HOWEVER, she said that if we have flooding starting, she will call the Captain, and tell him that her disabled friend who lives in the same complex needs to get her (me) and her cat to Suzanne's upstairs unit, that I'm on a walker, and need assistance. SO...the Marines will come if necessary.
Right now, I think we will be ok, although we are under a flood warning till Thursday. Well...most of the eastern part of the state is, actually. It certainly isn't specific to here, and as of late last night, the Pamlico river was not one of the ones in immediate danger of reaching flood levels.

Now I'll go get my email caught up, and if the power holds, I'll get back to TCS and post some more.
UPDATE 10 minutes later: JUST got off of The Weather Channel's Hurricane Central, and Matthew is downgraded to a Category 1, and is already beginning it's eastward turn. We may have dodged a bullet here. W" e'll get some gusts of up to 65mph, and a bunch of rain, but not what we were looking at. Still some flood danger...in fact, they are still calling it "Extreme," but it isn't what it was. We do have a tornado warning out right now, but I don't know exactly where one has been sighted.
I'm glad the marines and Suzanne are there for you and Hekitty, and I'm even more glad that I don't think you'll need them.

Women can always have their teeth fixed- until they get to menopause because of the hormones that are constantly cycling. Men have very little chance of having their teeth move after they're around 25 since their hormones have settled down after that.
I'm 28. Not sure if that's still young enough for my teeth to go where they should. I had my wisdom teeth cut out 6 years ago because there was no room for them and they were growing sideways into my other teeth. They hurt worse before they were cut out than they did immediately after the surgery. It was horrible. I just had a tooth in the back pulled a few weeks ago because a dentist screwed up a filling pretty bad years ago and the same dentist who removed my wisdom teeth fixed it but said it had more filling than tooth and would give me trouble again eventually. Eventually happened and they pulled it and I'm wondering if that's what's causing my fangs to be so insistent. They've done this before but not to the extent that they caused my other teeth to be loose.
Interesting information. Learn something new every day.

Use the words underage drinking.
Good to hear that she's ok. If you talk to her, tell her I'll trade her my power for her powerlessness. When I woke up this morning, I had this crazy hope that my power would be out so I could call into work. No such luck. I'm exhausted. There were idiot college kids partying quite loudly a block and a half away. I called in a noise complaint, but it was Saturday night so all the cops were out on calls. The dispatcher said she would send someone as soon as possible but I imagine a loud college party is probably pretty low priority. Understandable, but that doesn't make it any easier to sleep when they're screaming and being stupid. And then at some ridiculous hour this morning (I assume it was ridiculous; I didn't make the effort to look at the time) someone was outside honking and hollering for someone. I hate losing out on sleep. And, I can't quit yawning and I get in trouble if a monitor hears me yawn (or cough or sneeze or hiccup or make any sound that makes me human) because that is "unprofessional." How am I supposed to stop a yawn? I've been told to make sure I get enough sleep. Well, I would love to but that's a bit difficult when you have rude neighbors. And I don't mean the neighbors who live in my building - they're all great. It's the neighbors across the street or down the block. And it doesn't help that 2 of the monitors have a bit of a beef with me. They kept marking me below for the way I was doing a specific pat response and I checked with the person who did all the training and has been one of the heads of this project for the last 15 years and she said I was doing it right. The two monitors kept marking me below and I forwarded the e-mails to the project head who ended up re-briefing them all because I was right. And now those 2 are holding a grudge. I'm fine with being corrected if I'm wrong but if I'm right, I'm not just gonna lay down and take it. I'm stubborn like that.
we exchanged a few texts today. She called but my phone was in I don't give a blank mode. Husband was home watching the kittens so I grabbed a cat nap. To the person with the noisy college kids you can try calling the college if they are on campus or find the owner of the house and contact them.
Sorry, I don't expect her to call again until she has power back; her cell phone is her primary phone and she's conserving the battery.
She asked me to take the question of the day on Wednesday if she hasn't called to tell me she's back before then.
@Alicia88, I'm inclined to suggest a good pair of earplugs, except that they make it difficult to hear your alarm in the morning.

If they are on campus there may be a campus police number you can call.
Next time I have to call, I'll mention underage drinking. I can't be absolutely sure they're underage, but it seems likely that at least some of them are. I have no idea who owns the houses. I live right next to campus so I'm not sure if these houses are considered part of campus or not. This was a nice neighborhood when I first moved in. Quiet. In June I signed a lease for another year and a few weeks, the parties started. Go figure.
