Wow, I bet that sucked. I used to have AT&T but I switched cuz I got sick of having to call to get my bill fixed every month. And I mean every single month. They would overcharge me by at least $50 and once as much as $150. It was always something different, too. My sister got pregnant at 16 so I added her to my our cell own cuz I figured a cell phone would be important for a young man trying to go to high school. And I wasn't dumb. I got her unlimited texting. For the first 3 months she had it, they were charging $0.10 a text and I kept having to call and have them take that off because if I'm paying for unlimited texting, I'd better not also be paying per text. And then they said we went over our minutes, but we hadn't because I'd gone to the next plan up and it just went on and on. And even though it was AT&T's mistake, I was polite and didn't act like a female dog. I just went to Verizon because I got tired of spending at least half an hour on hold every month. Lol
ON behalf of those who answered your calls, and who had no control over the error, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Still battening down hatches here.  The models are thinking that Matthew will make that sharp east and south hook just before it gets directly on us, but it will come close.  Lots of 35-60 mph winds, and 3"-10" of rain.  This is the part that worries me.  I live in an area of town that used to be swamp, but was filled in and "reclaimed."  I have a bit of worry that we might get reclaimed for real, and by Mama Nature.  Flooding is an issue.  The City workers were out on our street all day yesterday and today, digging out and unclogging drainage ditches, so that is good.  No shelters have, as of yet, announced that they will accept pets.  Should worse come to worse, I will stay here with Hekitty, regardless.  I absolutely refuse to leave her.  Not happening.  Cross fingers.  If the rain stays under 6" we should be ok.

This happened in New Orleans and I thought FEMA had sorted it out. I promise any shelter you go to will have pets there. Cats have special challenges I a shelter setting but a call for crates and supplies should be easy.  Please bungee or zip tie your carrier. If Hekitty had to poo and pee in her crate and be miserable for a day that's still better than being left to drown, get sick or get out and killed. And we don't want that to happen to you either. I agree call 911 and ask for help getting out.

Ugh, that was appalling what happened in New Orleans. I have so many books with photos of the poor animals left behind to suffer.
The 2006 pets act was supposed to make fund available. Not only did the pets suffer so did many humans who refused to leave. Keep in mind most people shelter with friends and family if they can. Others choose motels and other temp lodging. So the people going to a shelter are often the most vulnerable in society. Either they don't have funds to weatherproof their homes and lay in supplies , a car for transport , handicapped or on a fixed income. These evacs have been in the planning for almost a week.

A lot of people in NOLA at that time - IIRC it was the end of the month - not only did not have wheels, but did not have bus fare to a safer place. But a lot of people there left their pit bulls on logging chains who could not escape & drowned. This was very wrong.

I don't think they expected the levees to break. People making decisions they shouldn't have to. Horses were put in barns and drowned. We have several cars we could live out of if we had to. If you don't have that option you make the choices you have. The idea was for this not to happen again.

True, but nobody in their right mind would leave their dog behind tied up with a logging chain. Some dogs actually strangled themselves trying to break the chain. If you have to leave your pet behind let him run free.

There was a lot of loose dogs causing lots of trouble after. Dogs in packs are never a good thing. There was not a good answer and the people in charge that should have had one told them to get on the bus and leave their pets on the road. You have parents choosing between their children and pets. Animals and humans suffered horribly and most for no reason in all of this. So when we have a beloved member staked out in her home because NC has announced they don't hare provisions for pets at shelters you see nothing has changed. She has a plan. The better plan would be @Mamanyt1953  at a warm safe dry shelter with her Hekitty with her or knowing she was being cared for by volunteers she could trust.

Reading this just made me sick.  I don't understand how people in charge don't realize that pets are family.  People who have pets but not kids can choose to take greater risks to ensure the safety of their pets - but they shouldn't have to.  If people have kids and pets and are forced to choose - well, obviously they would have to put their children first but no one should have to make those kinds of choices.

I've never been in a position like that.  I live in Missouri.  We have tornadoes sometimes, but nothing else.  I grew up in a trailer and rode out several tornadoes in it.  My apartment building has a basement and if a twister hits, we'll all head down.  Floods, though - it's not that easy.

I think I'm gonna starve to death.  My mouth is too small for my teeth so I have fangs.  Every so often, my fangs decide they want to be where they're supposed to be and my mouth gets all sore and teeth get loose, etc.  Well, it's happening again and it even worse than usual.  All of my front teeth are loose and I can barely stand to eat.  I'm gonna go to the dentist next week and see if I can get them to pull a few teeth so this stops happening.  Because it hurts.  On the other hand, I have a really good comeback if anyone ever accuses me of having a big mouth!  In the meantime, I'm gonna go heat up a can of clam chowder.

Can't they make you a retainer to keep the teeth in place?

I am so tired. It was a very long week. I had the nexplanon birth control thing installed in my arm and it hurts so bad! Didn't hurt getting it put in, but now it is really uncomfortable and bruised.

I'm sure they could.  I just need money to get dental work done.  My mouth isn't big enough for all my teeth and I grew up really poor.  I was on medicaid but there was only one dental clinic within 200 miles of where I lived that accepted Medicaid patients.  One Monday a month, they allowed Medicaid patients to call in for appointments.  My mom would take that Monday off work every month and start calling - kept getting a busy signal and by the time she got through, the appointments were gone.  I need to have a few teeth pulled and get braces to position the rest of my teeth but I need money to go to the dentist.  John got his new job though, so he's going to be making a lot more and after 6 months, he gets full medical for him and his whole family.  We've just gotta get married.  Which means I need to get divorced.  Haha.  AND he was one of 2 people handpicked to interview for a promotion - already.  He was on his second day of training when one of the bosses came up to him and said he'd caught his eye and should turn in his resume.  So he did and he had the interview yesterday and if he gets it, he'll be making close to $20 an hour.  So yay.

And he said, "If I get this, you can quit your job, you hate it anyway."  But I don't think I will.  If I did, that would mean I was depending on him and I never want to be in that position again.  To be honest, I'm a bit damaged.  Long story.  But I don't think I can handle depending on anyone again.  The lease is in my name, all the bills are in my name, and I made enough to pay all the bills on my own with no help from him if he leaves or whatever.  And I feel safe like that.

I'm chicken when it comes to birth control.  I stick with the pill.  LOL

Just a quick update while I know I have power.  So far, so good, although the worst of it won't be until later tonight.  Does anyone know why these dratted things always hit at  night?  I have three canvas totes packed, one with supplies for Hekitty, one with non-perishable food for me, and one with a limited supply of clothing, my meds, and basic hygiene supplies.  I have Hekitty's carrier out and ready.  SHOULD I have to get the heck out of Dodge, I can do so fairly quickly.  And, best news of all...Suzanne came over earlier, and a group of Marines came to her door a couple of days ago.  They brought non- perishable food and some things like that, and left her a business card to call if she needed help, or was even just afraid.  A Marine will be dispatched.  This is because she already has her social security disability.  HOWEVER, she said that if we have flooding starting, she will call the Captain, and tell him that her disabled friend who lives in the same complex needs to get her (me) and her cat to Suzanne's upstairs unit, that I'm on a walker, and need assistance.  SO...the Marines will come if necessary.

Right now, I think we will be ok, although we are under a flood warning till Thursday.  Well...most of the eastern part of the state is, actually.  It certainly isn't specific to here, and as of late last night, the Pamlico river was not one of the ones in immediate danger of reaching flood levels.

We've been having moderate rain and wind gusts since about noon, but nothing dangerous.  The pine tree across the parking lot has lost a few, small branches, but nothing big.  More like big twigs.  I've been out back several times to talk to the trees back there (OH STOP LAUGHING!), telling them to stay strong and hand tight through the storm.  We'll see.  They've outfaced more than one big storm in their lifetimes.  These are big, mature trees.  But it doesn't hurt to encourage them a bit (you're laughing again).

Now I'll go get my email caught up, and if the power holds, I'll get back to TCS and post some more.

UPDATE 10 minutes later:  JUST got off of The Weather Channel's Hurricane Central, and Matthew is downgraded to a Category 1, and is already beginning it's eastward turn.  We may have dodged a bullet here.  W" e'll get some gusts of up to 65mph, and a bunch of rain, but not what we were looking at.  Still some flood danger...in fact, they are still calling it "Extreme," but it isn't what it was.  We do have a tornado warning out right now, but I don't know exactly where one has been sighted.
