Friday my male cat ( 2.5 year, neutered) was taken to the vet for a lump that turned out to be an abscess. He had surgery, a drain, antibiotics, and is recovering. It didn't heal enough for it the drain to come out after 3 days so he has it in for another 4 days and a followup later this week. He normally is an indoor/outdoor cat whose out most of the evenings. Which has resulted in him being incredibly hyper at nights (meowing in my room and jumping on my face with a toy type hyper). He has an open toy box filled with toys and they are pretty much everywhere right now. He's taken to carrying them around and dropping them at the feet of the nearest human to play. The problem though isn't him.

The problem is my 1.5 year old female (spayed). Yesterday evening when I called her in (she is indoor/outdoor but never got the hang of the door so I bring her in at nights). She looked sleepy and I had to put her dinner bowl right under her nose before she ate. Last night neither of us got much sleep (she normally sleeps with me) as the male kept bringing us toys and waking us up. This morning she didn't come for breakfast, instead sitting under the dining room table watching the male eat, and I ended up bringing it too her which she ate when it was put near her. According to my Mom, she refused another food offering this afternoon and has been sleeping in my room all day.

Normally, the male and female go outside together and play. The female rarely goes very far from him or the other male (3.5 years old, also neutered) during the day but she's mostly with the injured one most days. I should mention she came from a feral colony; her mother disappeared when she probably 4-5 weeks and a year old male took over watching her and the other kittens so an older male cat watching over her is a staple in her life (its a long story including a woman who fed feral's because she liked the kittens but wouldn't let anyone else in and lots of dead kittens before I got my female out of there and convinced her to get the others fixed). So I am thinking that maybe between the stress of the male keeping us up the last two nights plus him not being with her outside that she may just be stressed/depressed. Regardless, I am taking her into the vet (oh, my poor credit card they just had their annuals three weeks ago plus the emergency and now this) for a check up tomorrow afternoon.

Anyone have any tips on how to handle it if it is stress. My male is stuck inside for the next 3 days so I can't change that. He gets incredibly antsy if doors are closed and he can't check on people so its not an option to close off part of the house (we are talking reaching under the door and hitting his head trying to open it antsy, no good). We've been playing with him and I plan on trying to tire him out before bed tonight so hopefully he doesn't wake us up as much. The female was fine the first 2.5 days or so but I think it's just gone on too long for her at this point.

I have no idea.  It could be stress, and things will go back to normal when...well...things go back to normal.  IF, however, she does not eat or drink, you have a problem that will need to be addressed by a vet, and quickly.  She may eat a bit less than normal with stress, but she should eat something.

Sometimes you can have a bit of an issue for a few days after one has been to the vet. The kitty who stayed at home doesn't recognize the smell of the other kitty, all they know is this is a new kitty who smells of a scary place is in their territory so it could be that kind of stress, or it could be that she's aware the male is "injured" and is reacting to the fact that he's not 100% at the moment. If you can get some maybe try a little feliway spray but yes, if she's not eating at all she does need a vet. Good luck. I hope she improves.

Thank you. She's lapping up the juice/broth from wet food pouches and eating two or three bites of food when I place a bowl directly beneath her head. She slept pretty much 36 hours straight at this point and has only woken up for maybe an hour combined to move and eat. She has a vet appointment this afternoon just to double check that it is nothing more serious.

Just got back from the vet. My male went in to get his abscess checked too. The male is a character and the vet loves him. He got his wound flushed and they said it's healing nicely. The female has a slight fever but not obvious injury or cause so the vet did sub fluids, antibiotics and a/d food to up her calories.

The picture is after my male got his wound flushed. He was thumping his tail down hard on the table and refused to look at us. Very obvious in his displeasure.

My female is still not eating as much as I want her too and sleeping constantly. She's lapping up the liquid and eating a bite or two of the wet food when i place it under her nose. Although she has started to move towards it and stand up when I bring it to her. I also syringe fed her some food yesterday, although that resulted in a very unhappy cat and I'm not sure how much actually made it in, at the vets direction to increase her calories. I have caught her eating dry food a few times but she always stops as soon as she sees me; which makes me think she may be eating more than I know and is doing some instinctual or feral thing with not feeling well and eating only when its 100% safe and no one is around.

My worry is I have an overnight trip planned with my niece and no one to feed her tonight. She's skittish and won't eat if anyone else offers (my mom has tried and she won't touch it from her and my mom is the second human she is comfortable with so if she can't no one can; and my parents can't this weekend anyways). My vet will board her but they'd have to force feed her and if she's sick because of stress that can't help any so I'd rather not put her through the additional stress of a carrier, cage and strangers. This trip has been planned for 6 months and is non-refundable so I can't cancel without letting down my niece and losing a few hundred dollars.

It's only 28 hours that I will be gone. She hasn't lost weight, she peed last night so her fluids are up, she has antibiotics in her (it was a single shot for a week treatment), and she's resting. My male should be able to go outside after his appointment today so he won't be driving her crazy all day trying to play with her (we have a door with a microchip lock and she can't go through it but he can).

I'm not being a horrible kitty mom by going, am I?
