Hello! We just adopted a Russian Blue last week and noticed yesterday that there was some eye discharge in one eye. He has it today too. We wiped it off. He also is squinting that eye. He seems okay besides the eye. We do have a vet appt for this Friday for a check-up. Can we wait until then as long as his eye doesn't get worse? What could be causing the eye discharge? Thanks so much for your help and have a Happy Labor Day!

It could be allergy due to the seasonal changes.  I have two who get that in the fall.  Until you get to the vet, it wouldn't hurt to use a drop of visine eye drops i thta eye and then wipe it gently all over with a kleenex.  That seems to stop the itch if it's allergy and relieve the inflammation.  However, if the eye gets worse, just rinse with clear saline water until you can get to the vet.  It could also be a virus starting, or a leftover from having a virus in the past (very common) and adding Lactoferrin to the food can help if it's a viral problem.  Search "lactoferrin" i the search bar at the top of the page to read more threads about it.  I use it on one of my cats.  Without it, one eye runs, from a viral infection she had as a kitten.  As long as she gets her daily lactoferrin (mixed with either bacon fat or cconut oil and baby food) her eye dosnt run.

Since he's new to your home, it could be due to stress. My Penny gets eye discharge whenever she's feeling stressed; lots of company, new kitten, etc. For her it usually goes away with time.

Thank you!  We did take him to the vet and got an antibiotic for his eye.  It seems to be a little better.
