I was really excited when I found a couple of tins of a new product at Pet-O today. I know Feline Natural has a line of freeze dried food but I had no idea this existed. The ingredient list looked great. There are two types:

Chicken and Venison, the ingredients looked really impressibe and the Minimum Crude Protein: 10.4%, Minimum Crude Fat: 3.3%...

and;

Chicken and Lamb. I've just noticed that it has only Minimum Crude Protein: 6.8%, Minimum Crude Fat: 4.4%...

This is the ingredient list: Chicken, Lamb Heart, Lamb Kidney, Lamb Liver, Lamb Blood, Flaxseed Flakes, New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel (Perna Canaliculus), Dried Kelp, Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Proteinate, Canola Oil, Manganese Proteinate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid. Water added for processing.

Why would the Chicken and Lamb product only have 6.8% protein when it is just meat? Is the freeze dried version any different (other than being raw when this one is cooked) or do you just have to feed your cat double? I'm  very confused (and also a vegetarian so please go easy on me).

The minimum amount of crude protein the food contains is 6.8%. The actual protein content may be much higher but unless you contact the company and ask for the "as fed" nutritional values (and some companies won't give that out), you simply don't know how much protein is exactly in the food

Feline Natural's raw food is a good product, IMO, so I would be comfortable feeding the canned food. You would not need to feed more canned food to get more protein into the cat.

Our cats love the Feline Natural freeze-dried food and I'm planning to try the canned chicken/lamb out on them, too. And yes, it can be difficult to make sense of label numbers!

6.8% is a bit low, I probably wouldn't feed that exclusively. Lamb is a bit fatty, so maybe that has something to do with it. I'm very eager to get my hands on the chicken/venison because my cats like the FD and love venison. I'll probably have to wait until chewy carries it though and buy a case.
