My vet decided my girl Monkey has a bacterial infection. We've been treating with steroids and clindamycin. She's been responding well, but needs 2 more weeks of both medications. My vet ran out of the clindamycin and had me pick it up at the pharmacy. The problem is the pharmacy had to mix it to get the proper dose so I have to give her a larger amount (1.66ml) and its cherry flavored. She is having trouble keeping it down and I don't know if it's from the amount or the flavoring or both. (The original from the vet wasn't flavored)
How do I help her keep it down? Would giving it to her in smaller amounts help? (I was thinking of doing half a dose, waiting 15-20 minutes to see if it stayed down then doing the other half)
is there a way to help mask some of the flavor?

Ugh, I'm sure the cherry flavor is not great for a cat! Maybe giving it in two separate doses would help. I've often mixed medication in with gerber or beechnut baby food (chicken, ham, or turkey flavors in the little jars). All the cats I've experienced so far really love the baby food and will lap up every last drop, so it's not hard to get them to eat the full dose. And maybe the food will help her keep it down as well.

The cherry flavor probably isn't helping. Some pharmacies have medicine flavorings for pets: chicken, cheese, bacon, etc. You can ask the pharmacy if those are available. At least you didn't get grape flavoring. Grapes in general are toxic to cats. I'm not sure about grape flavoring (which is probably fake and not made from real grapes) but I'd still wouldn't risk it.

For now try masking the cherry flavored medicine with meat baby food or super stinky canned food in gravy.

I'll have to try the baby food.
This morning after I squirt the medicine in her mouth I used the syringe to get some water in after hoping it would help get it down and get the flavor out of her mouth faster. She kept it down but it was a close call and I just feel terrible that she's having a hard time with it.

Get a 3ml oral syringe from the vet or from a medical supply store.  Give it to her in small doses over several minutes.  I'm also sure it's the flavoring that is the culprit.  Wrap her in a towel and tuck her into your arm pit with her head away from you.  Placing her on a counter helps.  Give her tiny doses (like .25ml at a time) and see if she does not tolerate that better.  Poor baby.  I feel bad for her.  I've had to dose kittens with Azithromycin for really bad URIs, which is cherry flavored but it's a tiny amount so it went down easier.

I'll try the smaller doses tonight and see how that works for us. I was worried when I got home and realized it was cherry. I don't even like cherry meds, so I'm sure she hates them

our cat seems to be out smarting us at every dose, whether we try small doses, hold mouth shut, etc, he always manages to spit out some of his dosage. currently giving pancur but he did this with probiotic too which was a different texture. i've been afraid to mix in case he wont eat it and another dose is wasted. would love some tips? is there something strong enough to mask the smell and taste of pancur for cats?

How are you administering it? My kitten wasn't on pancur but was on some awful tasting antibiotics (I accidentally got a taste of it...lol). I used one of two methods. I wrapped him burrito style in a towel, with just his head exposed, or I grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and pulled him back so his paws lifted. I can't say which worked better because he fought me tooth and nail both ways. I put the syringe in the side of his mouth at the back and administered it drop by drop, letting him swallow in between. With it being so far back in his mouth he couldn't spit it out. I lost one dose by giving it to him too quickly and he threw it up. Drop by drop took forever and was torture but was the only way he'd keep it down and not spit it out. That's all I got. I much prefer giving meds to my bottle fed baby, it's like second nature to him. Good luck, I hope someone has some good ideas for you.
