Hello,

My cat had an eye issue that resolved but the vet could not figure out what it was.  Please let me know if you have had something very similar to this.  It was NOT cat herpes, he tested negative.  Tonight his eyes looked a little weepy so I am writing this out in case he relapses..

My boy cat's eye became cloudy all of a sudden.  He has beautiful green eyes and suddenly his left eye was opaque yellow.  He was squinting (a sign the eye is in pain).  The third eye was very many shades of pink & red.  He was acting extremely needy, following me around everywhere and meowing.  Eventually I settled in one room and he fell asleep, not wanting to get up or move at all.  I called the vet, they said bring him in right now.  The vet tested his eye pressures, swabbed for foxtails or other objects, and also did a dye test to see if he had a trauma to his eye.  None of these tests gave us a diagnosis.  She prescribed a topical Anti-Bacterial, rather than a steroid.

The next day he won't eat breakfast, and a few hours later the other eye is affected.  Same deal, squinty, third eye pink/red..  I call & bring him in immediately.  She runs blood work and does an x-ray.  His WBC count is high, but other than that nothing unusual.  Negative for cat herpes, leukemia...  After examining him again, we notice his first eye has already begun to clear up.  But it is still not back to normal and the other eye is still opaque.  He is lethargic, not even minding two days in a row to the vet.  He just pushes himself into my chest and sits there, falls asleep.  I also notice his nose is VERY RED.  His nose is normally barely pink.  It looks like he touched his nose to the stove or something.  It also had a weird scab on it.

Vet prescribes topical antibiotic (Terramycin) in both eyes and oral antibiotic that has a pain relieving side effect & directs to the eye. (Sorry I cannot remember the name but can get it later.)  Topical 3x per day and oral 2x per day.  Poor kitty hated me after his energy returned a few days later.  My vet also called an eye specialist that is 3 hours away.  This vet deduced that his posterior cornea was edemas.  That does not really direct us toward any diagnosis...it does not even help to pear it down.  But the other vet was very concerned about it spreading to the other eye so quickly.  In the end I decided to wait it out to see how my cat did (the vet had ONE apt available for 8a the following morning, and was closed for 3 days after...).

It took him about 5 days to return to normal.  The first two days after the second vet visit he was extremely needy.  He woke me up in the middle of the night by meowing in my face!!  He has never done that before or since.  I woke up and petted him and he curled up on my chest.  He normally sleeps on my chest here and there but during this time he needed to be on my chest or curled around my head or over my neck ALL NIGHT LONG.  i did not get very much sleep but i was glad to comfort him.

so his eyes have been back to normal for a few weeks.

but this evening I noticed both eyes looked slightly weepy.  no color change but i am feeling a little nervous for how his eyes will look tomorrow.

if you have any similar experience or idea please share.

Thanks for your sympathies.  I am just looking for anyone else who has had this experience because we couldn't come to a diagnosis.
