Hello there. I had to put my cat in a cattery for a few days while I was out of town and when I came back she seemed to have bit of a cold with some clear fluid in her lungs. That in itself isn't unusual since she is a flu carrier however the next day she suddenly stood up and began spasmodically coughing and wheezing very loudly for about twenty seconds while bringing up and swallowing fluid. It sounded like a combination of a child's croup cough and wheezing. She did the same thing yesterday and today I can still hear fluid in her lungs. When looking online for audio/videos, the coughing/wheezing precisely matched a video showing a cat having an asthma attack.

I'm not sure what to do now. It is possible that her condition is being exacerbated by a slight cold, she has had minor coughing fits in the past but nothing like this. Should I wait a week or two to see how things go once her cold passes or should I take her to a vet now?

Thanks folks.

I have a kitty with asthma/ allergies. I do believe colds definitely will irritate this condition. I too found videos on YouTube very helpful. When my guy coughs you can clearly tell he's shuffling mucus around while coughing and then swallowing it down afterwards.

You should try to get a video of the coughing and maybe call your vet tomorrow and see what they think? My guy usually has the cough for a week or so when it's acting up and it just goes away.

Good luck!
