Hi guys, I'm fostering mama moggie and 4 kittens. Kittens just over 6 weeks old, but not interested in solid food yet (except for one who will lick a bit of Whiskas kitten food). All they want is mum's milk! I've tried just about everything including baby food & sardines, but no success yet. Is this normal, are some cats just slow developers? They're drinking, peeing & pooing ok, just not eating solids. Mama doesn't mind feeding them on demand, even though she's on antibiotics for mastitis. I've been separating mama & kitties for up to 4 hrs at a time, but the little ones still won't touch food. Anything else you would recommend to speed things up? Or should I just leave it & let them take their time?

They'll just have to take their own time.  They all wean, eventually, even if it takes Mama saying, "ENUFF AWREDDY!" to get it done.  I'll bet that they are beginning to get interested in some sort of solids within a week to 10 days, outside.  You might try Gerber baby food, chicken or turkey, mixed with a little KMR.

They really need to stay with mom for 10-12 weeks, and she will probably allow occasional nursing for most, if not all, of that time, but by about 8 weeks, they should be mainly dependent on solids.  The extra time is for mama to teach them cat manners, so that they don't grow up clueless and using teeth and claws inappropriately on humans.

Bear in mind too, weaning is a process. Kittens are expected to start weaning around six weeks, but it may take a few weeks to completely wean. Some will even stay on the teat for as long as their mom will let them; my kitten's brother didn't completely wean until he was about 14 weeks old! He only stopped because his momma got ticked off

My kittens are still here with their mom at 16 weeks she will let one maybe two nurse at a time a few times a day , if a three try she leaves. They are 4 pounds to her 6 or 7 ( she has actually put in weight the last two months) started goat milk mixed with baby food at five weeks then just baby food then mixed with kitten food but some help themselves to dry during that time. Weening means the into to soilds[emoji]128578[/emoji]
