Hi, I am a new cat-owner, I was always a dog person so I'm paranoid. I have a kitty named Señor and he is a british longhair. I took him to the vet yesterday and they said he had colds and fever so I had to give him Liv. 52 and Vitamins, and vibravet paste. Although, i had other concerns which I was not able to address to the veterinatians yesterday that he had other other symptoms way before that I've noticed:

- he breathes faster than normal, and loudly too! Like lous human breathing and making this weird wheezy snory sound when he shifts position. (He is not in high temperatures, he is in an airconditioned room with 23 degrees celsius.
- he has red gum lining around his teeth and has a lump on his gums too (see photo
yes his fur had vitamins all over hence the yellow stains)
- he vomitted once, and peed outside the litterbox once (which i guess really isn't that big of a deal)

Sooo please cat owners and experts help me out!!!! It would mean the world to my kitty [emoji]10084[/emoji]️ If u wanna see my precious baby his instagram is @senorthebrit :)

The fast breathing is from the cold. It would help if you took him to the bathroom and had the shower running and shut the door so he can breath the steam. The antibiotics will help clear it up. He may have an abscess with the tooth. I think his gums look awful light  but it may be the lighting. I think maybe another visit to the vet to let that be checked.

Thanks for your tips will def do that! :) Although, he was breathing fast way waaay before he had the cold and i've noticed it a lot when he was still younger too but thought it was normal until one of my friends noticed it too. When I asked my fellow cat owner friends they told me their cats breathe like that only when they're in a high temperature area, (and as I've mentioned, my kitty is in an airconditioned room - not too cold, not hot either) and my cat breathes like this ALL the time I haven't seen him breathe at a normal pace EVER, and I notice it a lot too everytime I try to breathe at the same pace as him when his chest rises and falls. What could this be from? Is this something I should be worried about?

Can you give us a little more history on Senor.  How old is he?  When did you adopt him and did they give him clean bill of health when you got him?  Is he current on all his shots, etc?

Did the Vet check him for a URI, since peeing outside the box is NOT normal, put could be put to stress if he is brand new to your household.

What did they say about his teeth and that lump?

As to the breathing and wheezing, did they discuss asthma with you as a possiblity?

Hi there! Señor is turning 1 on September 26. When I adopted him he wasn't healthy, but it wasn't that bad either. He was just very thin and he had ear mites but that's all. He started gaining weight immediately once we took him in and he already had the essential shots such as rabies and heartworm.

Well for URI, he only peed outside the litterbox once, and he did seem distressed at the time because he wanted to go out of my room very badly which he can't at that time because it was at night. He kept meowing and making other sounds by the door and even tried to open the door himself. He also pees normally now and I heard that sometimes they have to be kind of in pain while peeing? He doesn't have any problem with that :) But no, the vets haven't checked him for URI yet.

None, they didn't say nothing about it. It's really weird!

I kept telling my vets that he breathes fast, but when they check his BP in the clinic they did say it was fast because he usually gets REALLY distressed during conditions outside of our home, and he tends to breathe very very fast whenever we do take him in the car and to the vet, but I told them that even when at rest, he breathes really fast still and they just didn't do anything about it and told me to observe it a little bit.

I plan to take him to the vet again next week and discuss all these problems with proof because I have started to film him for the past few days. Hopefully he gets well soon :( Also, what is an indicator that he doesn't have a fever anymore?

Thank for your help in advance :)

How is your boy doing today?

I too am curious about the lump in his mouth.  Does he suffer from constipation?

First off, I accidentally typed URI when I meant uTI.  Mea Culpa.  When the Vet said he had a cold, THAT is a URI (upper respiratory infection, basically).  UTI is urinary Tract Infection, but I think you're right...it sounds like maybe he was just stressed out when he peed outside the box.  Keep an eye on him though to make sure it doesn't happen again.  If so, it might be indicative of something more.  When they get stressed, they can actually cause themselves bladder issues
.

Without an actual thermometer, it's kind of hard to know when they don't have a fever anymore, but some signs that it's gone are that they tend to feel better. Not as lethargic, kind of like us humans.  Here is a quote from pets.webmd.com: regarding fevers in cats:

Watch for these signs of a fever:
  • Loss of appetite
  • Depression
  • Lack of energy or activity
  • Decreased drinking
  • Decreased grooming
  • Shivering or rapid breathing
That rapid breathing you were witnessing may have been his fever!  If he's still doing it, you might give your Vet a call and tell them, in case they might want to change his treatment.  I don't know, but it's worth a phone call at the very least.
