I have two cats, one boy one girl.  The boy cat is 3 and a half years old and he is absolutely perfect.  The female cat is 4 years old and is ruining my life.  I got her when she was a kitten, she's been spayed, and she has been having issues going outside the litter box since day one.  At first she use to go in my bed, sometimes peeing sometimes pooping.  I would also figure out that she had peed on my clothes as well.  I moved a couple times and she has continued to pee and poop in my bed, but then became more adventurous moving to using the couch and a bath tub.  However now she has moved to my new rug and I am running out options.  She does use the litter box at times but continues to go all over the house.  I have used different types of litter as well as boxes for her to use not to mention them constantly being clean. I have recently purchased a calming collar for her but it doesn't appear to be working.  She's a very sweet cat but I cant afford to keep replacing items that she has ruined.  I'm getting extremely stressed out as well as my roommate.  I'd hate to give up on her but I don't know what else to do.  Any suggestions?

The first thing to do is get her to the vet, and make sure that it's not a medical condition that makes her go outside her litter box.

If it's not, then it's behavioral, but you need to rule out medical first.

It definitely sounds like she doesn't like SOMETHING about the litter, the box, or the location. Try a new box in a different location with a totally different unscented litter, just for her. Use a good enzyme cleaner for your urine areas or she will keep going there. You might have to try several to get the perfect one that truly eliminates odors. For rugs and couches. get some of that clear plastic 'runner' for carpet protection that has the little 'nubs' on the back. Then turn it upside down, nubs up, (even on your bed) and she won't walk there any m,ore. These are easily removable and are used until she is discouraged from returning to that spot.  As a last resort you may have to confine her to one room until she consistently uses the box, like a 'retraining'. Some cats like one box for urine and another for pooing. It wouldn't hurt to have a lot of boxes around for now and then start to eliminate them when she starts using some of them. Please don't give up, she has a reason fro all this, you just haven't found it yet. All the luck and bless you for your patience.

How many litter boxes do you have? The general rule of thumb is the number of cats you have plus one. With two cats, you should have three boxes.

To the OP, I have 3 cats and only have 2 litter boxes. I don't necessarily subscribe to the # of cats +1 theory, though I know a lot of people do.

I clean out their boxes every day, and wipe the floor in the immediate areas of each box with cleaning wipes. I like those areas sanitized.

I don't know if this is medical or behavioral, but I can only imagine how frustrated you are. I admire you for your determination in loving her all these years even though you've experienced behaviors that would drive any cat owner crazy.

I use corncob litter that I get at Walmart. Have you tried it yet? I think it's the best litter out there...
