My cat is almost 1 year old, and a day or two ago, he began coughing. The fits last about 10 seconds, and it only happens about 1 time per day. In the morning, when he is meowing for his food, his meow also sounds raspy for about half an hour, then returns to normal. He acts normal and his breathing sounds clear.

I'm wondering if it is a hairball, but my older cat didn't start getting them until about 8 years old. Isn't 1 year old a little young to be getting hairballs?

We are fostering a litter of kittens, but they have been kept in the basement and the residents and fosters have never meet each other. We also have a cold traveling around our human family. Could this have something to do with it?

If we need to call the vet, we will, but it is terribly expensive, which is why we haven't called yet.

It could be asthma or allergies or anything respiratory related. I'd have a vet check it out. If you can, take a video of the coughing and send it to the vet. The vet may be able to determine from the video if your cat needs to be seen for a check up or not.

Are there any low cost vet clinics in your area? Those types of clinics charge less than a regular full service vet hospital /office.

Cats can have hairballs at any age.
