My Nebbas was just diagnosed with megacolon and the vet prescribed 2.5 mgs twice a day of cisapride. She has been on it since Tuesday and has had two small bowel movements but still is uncomfortable and hiding under the bathroom cabinet. She has a great appetite which is good but also tells me that she should be going to the bathroom more than this.

I am going to talk to the vet on Monday about increasing her dose but wanted to know from you all who hve a cat on this med what dose did you start at and what dose did you go up to that worked?

I do. My cat Booberry was a stray before we brought him in. He is on Cisapride because of a pelvic fracture from his wild and free days and because of nerve issues, he gets Cisapride twice a day. I notice with him that the Cisapride is not necessarily on schedule. And as it's working, if he has some quantity to eliminate, he clearly feels uncomfortable until the medicine fully kicks in and he can go.

My vet also has me giving him 1/4 teaspoon of Miralax with his meals to help with moisture. That makes it easier for him to go. You may want to ask if this is appropriate for your kitty. I assume that your cat gets wet food? It can be a taste gamble with cats, but perhaps mix a bit of warm water with the canned food to get extra water into her.

Because Boo was on strict rest for 8 weeks while he was healing, he got used to being a meatloaf. I have to play with him more so he gets moving, which helps other things get moving too. I found that brushing him relaxes him when he knows he needs to go but gets anxious about it and can't. That also helps interestingly enough.

I'd wait to start the miralax until you talk to the vet and then for sure until after she goes.

I had actually found out about miralax from this forum when her constipation first started! The vet wanted her on lactulose but I am so glad the miralax worked because trying to give her the lactulose was a nightmare!!

She was first put on miralax for constipation about a month ago but now the vet says she has megacolon, so although her stool is soft from the miralax she needs the cisapride to keep everything moving.

That is interesting that you can tell when the medicine hasn't fully kicked in yet by the way your cat acts. I really hope for Nebbas it is just a matter of getting her at the right dosage because I hate seeing her like this, she just lays in her spot and does not move!

Did you have to change the amount for your cat or did it seem to work immediately? I know it is working for Nebbas because she has went 3 days in a row but it is small amounts and I think that is why she feels bad because its not all getting out.

My boy is on ciscipride 3x daily and has been for 14 yrs.

Make sure you reduce dry food as that is constipating for kitties with this condition.

Also, I found Restoralax better than Mirilax. Less bloating and cramping. Not sure if you have that option where you live? I'm in Canada and perhaps Restoralax is available only here?

You will notice high time for poopies and less poopies. My boy can go up to 5 days before having a 'full evacuation'.

Have your vet teach you how to massage his colon--that is the best thing to help it move along. :)

We had to up the concentration in the Cisapride. It actually might be able to be higher.

Dark horse, I'm sorry your baby isn't feeling well too. I'm sure like me you would take and do anything to take the pain and sickness away. I keep on having backwards steps and feel guilty for what he is going through. I know I don't have alot of knowledge because you sure have helped me.. Just went to get Pepcid Ac and hoping it will help but anyway I hope your baby gets better soon too . I just wonder if Romeos has went away his lab test very high. Sending blessings to your baby and to you.

Thank you so much @romeo911   Like you, I am an emotional mess. My boy is doing better one minute, but then the next, not so great. I am trying to figure out what the root cause is and the reality is, I'm not going to put him through a bevvy of tests. He's almost 17.  I just want to get him past this pancreatitis and get him back to the happy elderly kitty he was.

The pepcid AC has been a life saver---I read that it also helps control the bile to help the pancreas heal---crossing fingers both of our boys improve.

@Nebs  Thank you <3. Sadly, I think my boy's time is coming to a close...and it's not easy to accept. But, his quality of life right now isn't the best. He's not ready to give up----anytime I mention it, he gets scared, so I will just do what I can to make him comfortable and he will let me know when it's time....

I am so sorry. I have heard that cats will let you know when they are ready- I will pray that you will have a peace about that when the time comes.
