I am about to make a large purchase of canned food for all the cats I am caring for (4 outside and 3 inside. All adults) and was wondering if the Walmart brand Special Kitty is equal or worse than Friskies canned food.

Thing is the Special Kitty can be bought for $1 22oz vs $1 13oz for Friskies.

Any insight on how good, bad, comparable is the Special Kitty canned food?

Thanks in advance.

P.S: Does the Pate form yield more vs shreds in sauce etc?

thanks!!

My girl is on the special Royal Canin Urinary SO - but because she can't really have fish, I give her a treat once a week for one meal she either gets, either Fancy Feast Classic Pate (certain flavors without fish) or Key Food also without fish and/or Friskies Country Dinner.

I found that she's doing really well with these cheaper foods, I think Friskies is a decent cheap brand.

I personally don't like dealing with the shredded or cubed foods, my gal mostly spits them out, and I have to use a hand blender as it is for the pate anyway.

This trick I figured out may help you.

I take one can of food, add a full can of very hot hot water, then use the hand blender and it gets really smooth, slightly watery.  This gives me an entire can more.  And if you refrigerate the food it becomes pudding like and you can add more water upon feeding.

Are you also feeding dry?

Thanks for the GREAT tip on adding water since I have to refrigerate some cans anyway due to feeding schedules lol.. ( I have the inside cats on a different schedule than the outside ones, crazy but it works around our schedules here)

By diluting the can aren't you reducing their caloric intake? This could be good news and could help my fat cat lose a few pounds.

I also have the Rachel Ray dry food that I sprinkle on their canned food, but lately it is just fully wet and kibble for snack.

Where are you buying your food, If I may ask?

I use Special Kitty canned food sometimes. Mixed Grill, Super Supper, Chicken & Tuna, Turkey & Giblets, and Beef & Liver aren't too bad. But none of my cats like Beef and Liver. Avoid the tuna flavor---lots of fillers. Also best to avoid the chunks and shreds, as they have wheat gluten and are higher in carbs. I wouldn't feed it exclusively, as I feel that Purina has a better vitamin/mineral mix. But in rotation with Friskies it's OK.

If there's a Dollar Tree in your area. . .they have 13-oz Friskies for $1 (Walmart charges $1.08 now). You can order some cases online and have them shipped to the store for pickup at no charge. That's the best price I've found, other than occasionally finding a good deal online.

My girl is 20lbs and had crystals, and after her bother died I noticed she's not drinking from the bowl as much, I believe she was a little copy cat.  So the extra water and stretching out the blended food, mixed with the pumpkin has kept her balanced.

This now allows me to leave out a 1/4 of the dry Royal Canin Urinary SO calorie control which she can eat at her leisure.

I think she lost a little, I can see definition around her hip area, and she's no longer bloated.

I by the fancy feast and store brand at my grocery but the royal canin I get from my local mom & pop pet store who has a license to sell it.

I know others use Chewy Online, but I've never needed.

I can't tell you enough, how the proctor silex hand blended has made this easy, and I don't waste a drop.

Best to you and your furry family. LOL

Thanks for all the input! I have bought a few cans of Special Kitty to try and see if they like it, but I am buying the bulk of Friskies 13oz. :)
