I've been feeding my cat wellness complete health dry food in the mornings and Sheba pate canned in the evenings. I was initially going to upgrade my cat to a higher quality canned food, but now I'm on the search for dry food first.

The food I currently feed her has whitefish meal and rice listed in the top five ingredients. In fact, all of the Wellness dry food I checked has whitefish meal listed in the top five. I can't seem to find a dry food that doesn't have fish meal listed in the top five ingredients except for Natures Variety Instinct. My problem with that, however, is it has canola oil in the top five. I've never heard of canola oil in cat food and I'm kind of iffy feeding it to my cat, especially since we don't even use it in our house for our food.

Does anyone have any suggestions for food brands? Please keep in mind I would like to keep her on dry and wet food. She is a slow eater and the dry food allows her to eat throughout the day.

i think you will find that all commercial cat foods are flawed. Just feed the best one you can afford. I don't think a little fish is harmful as long as the food is mainly poultry-based and I also think that it depends on where the fish comes from, what waters was it was fished in, etc. As for canola oil, well I cook with it so I'm eating it so I wouldn't worry about it. If you really want to avoid certain ingredients you could try one of those limited ingredients diets, it's for cats with allergies but it's just as fine to feed to a healthy cat. They tend to have alternative protein sources like rabbit or venizon. Your cat may be eating fancier than you.

The only "kibble" that's decent is Ziwipeak air dried, but it's not really kibble it's more like meat jerky pieces. Honestly just transition your cat to 100% wet food.

The best I think is Fromms Hasen Duckenpfeffer. The first 5 ingredients are rabbit, duck, duck meal, turkey liver, dried whole egg. I feed this just as a treat because wet is best. Buy it at Hollywood Feed.

Thanks for the replies!

Tuffsmom I've always heard great things about Fromm. I checked their other recipes out and wasn't too impressed. I think I may just have to try this one though!

Missmimz I understand that wet may be better, but my cat has a misaligned jaw. It doesn't bother her eating, but it has resulted in her eating slower. Vet didn't see a reason to fix it at her age as she never seems to be in pain and is still eating. At least with kibble she is able to chow down throughout the day. Plus, she still gets canned in the evening...

Sorry about your cats jaw. The Fromm I recommended has really small pieces, so that might be beneficial.
