Hello!

I am very confused by my kitten right now.  She meows when she can't see me, and I know what's up with that. I'm a college student and the semester just began, so I went from usually home, to gone most days for a good 8 hours. But I've noticed something weird.  If she loses sight of me, she can't seem to find me.  I don't have to move for this.  If I'm on the bed, for instance, and she's on the ground, if i sit on the far side of the bed, she can't see me, and she starts meowing for me, and looking for me.  Or I'll be making my lunch in the kitchen, and she'll wander out, then start meowing to look for me, and half the time she can't find me because her back is to me.

I've tried feeding her, to see if that was it, and it didn't work. She didn't want to play or be pet, and have a clean litter box or fresh water. She doesn't want to cuddle or be held. But she stops meowing when she sees me.

I'm mostly concerned that she can't find me, when I'm within two feet of her, if her back is to me.  She had a series of seizures for about three to four days straight about three weeks ago, about 25 total.  We managed to cure her of those (turned out to be a liver infection).  I don't know if this is normal though, as she was only about five weeks when that happened.  She's a rescue kitten whose mom dropped her off at my doorstep, basically, and abandoned her there because of an ulcerated eye (she had to get it removed). I've hand reared her, though she was already largely weaned, but she's too little for me to really know if she's always had this problem or not.

This is my first kitten.  I've always had older cats. Is this a kitten thing? Or is there something wrong?

It sounds to me like she meows because she wants to just be near you.  One of my cats does this but he is an adult and has never had the health issue you mentioned.  When Apollo does this to me I start calling him to come to me and he usually does.Sometimes Apollo will just walk around the house meowing and I think it is because he is looking for my hubby after he leaves for work on my days off.  When this is happening I let him know where I am but just have to wait for him to stop looking for my hubby.   Have you tried calling out to him and does he respond to the sound of your voice?  If this were my cat I would call  the vet's office that treated the liver infection and ask them about it.  I have had kittens but I only remember them meowing like that if they were trying to find me while I was in a different part of the house.  I live in a multi-level townhouse.

It might be her age.  When my 2 were little they'd start meowing if they suddenly realized the other one wasn't in the room.  The other would meow back and they'd run to each other.  I don't have any experience with cats who have had seizures and with her having lost an eye; that could affect her too.

I am sure it's just her age.  I foster kittens and when I take in a new batch I bring the bigger kids out of the foster room into the general house until they are big enough to put on the shelter adoption floor (3 pounds).  When they lose sight of me they cry and cry.  I just call to them and they hear my voice and come running - all happy and bouncy again.  I would not think much about it.  Just let your voice call to them and they will eventually get comfortable being out of sight of mom.  You don't say how old she is so that would be more helpful to us.  Tiny kittens get separation anxiety often.
