After far too many years I have finally gone to a dentist! It turns out i do have an abcess, need three extractions and couple of fillings. On the upside the practice was lovely, all of the people really helpful and one of the nurses was extremely pretty
. Also as They took me on NHS the whole treatment over the next few visits shouldn't be more than £200. Not a bad experience at all, except for the picture of George Clooney looking down from the ceiling!

Up here, Sunderland, we have a proliferation. I was lucky to get this one as there was no waiting list, but at least 4 others had waiting lists of two weeks or less!

The North-East is the answer to many of life's problems!

I've never had a problem finding a dentist on the NHS?!. I just changed mine last year when i moved and there was no problem.

Saying that, there was something on the news last week about dentists coming over from another country to set up practices as there was'nt enough dentists in training in the UK!.

P.S. Im not far from you either-Hebburn!!!!

Movin' on up!
After too many years, I finally made a dentist appt, for next Thursday. My many years of dentistphobia and lack of insurance are catching up with me and I finally bit the bullet. Hopefully, a good scraping and cleaning will do the trick but I'm afraid that my receding gums are going to need surgery. Bring on the heavy drugs!

I love going to the dentist. Which is odd since when I was a child I was so scared to go. I think it was when I got my wisdom teeth pulled I started to love going to the dentist.

So I changed toothpaste. From Sparkle Crest for kids to that new orange flavoured crest whitening. So after 2 weeks of using the orange stuff my tooth gets to be in so much pain. I can't drink anything cold or hot even going outside and breathing through my mouth would get the pain started.

I went in and he didn't see anything wrong with my tooth at all. Yet I'm in pain. So realizing it started after I changed my toothpaste and now going back to the children's toothpaste my tooth feels better.

Ok I don't know why I just typed that story out...but hey. I went. Sucks that I don't have coverage, but I would hate to have summer teeth....you know some are here some are there.... HAHA

I go to a dental school, dont have o pay anything!! But they only do fillings and extractions so for any magor surgury or work I would have to go to a "real" dentist.

I just recently had my upper wisdom teeth pulled, but I have to have surgury to get my lower ones taken out because they are impacted. I broke my upper left one bitting into a muffin (it was a hard nut) last May but didn't get it untill Oct. 30 (What a wonderful Halloween Gift!!) and boy did it ever hurt. It was infected and the freezing wasn't working so she had to give me 6 needles (And I don't like needles) but my right upper was taken out in less then an hour, I don't drive so I was stuck in the waiting room for and hour and a half. That is the last time I go any where with out a book.

BTW, what is a NHS???

(Sorry to ramble on)

I could go to the dental school for a check up or what not for very cheap, but I really like my dentist. I've had his as a dentist since I was 4. I would never trade him in. He can't retire until I lose all my teeth.

I'm not THAT keen on the dentist but I keep up with the regular checks and all and then pray HARD that nothing is found.
Rosiemac-the dentist that was in the news was from the Netherlands (I think) and had a queue of 2,000 people waiting to sign up on the day they opened! they had to turn people away. The South may have the money but they aint got the goods!

Yeah we pay in our taxes PLUS at the counter, so much for the NHS.

Where you have to have medical insurance in your country, we pay for it in our taxes.

I could have probably figured that out if I was a little bit smarter (or a little less tired) What else could it stand for!!

Thank you for telling me.

My boyfriend's sister's boyfriend's brother is a dentist at the school where I go and he recomended it highly.
I had a dentist like yours when we lived in Ontario and I wouldn't have changed from him but its a little far to go to have checkups

an interesting comment made by someone was that in Canada the dental school can't do surgery??
Here in the UK, its the dentists which refer patients to the university hospitals for difficult extractions etc.
As a trainee dentist i have to say that the problem is not many dentists are willing to work for the NHS anymore, most are going private. However sad it may be, unfortunately the pay for dentists on the NHS is simply not enough.
