We have 2 rescue cats from the same litter that we got from the shelter 4 years ago when they were tiny kittens. They have had all their immunizations since whenever they were due. The last time our Tippy, the male cat, got his, he got a fever, was lethargic, and when we called the vet, she gave him a benedril injection. He recovered immediately. This year they were due for rabies and the other one(can't recall what). The vet gave Tippy a benedryl injection first so he would have a better result with the rabies shot. He immediately started choking, drooling, and got very anxious, crawling up on us. His sister did not have any reaction to the immunizations.
The vet then gave him a shot to counteract his reaction. She could not then give him a rabies shot.
She was going to do some research on whether there was a different version of the rabies shot. She said in all her years she never had a cat react to a benedryl injection. And he is our calm, affectionate, fearless cat.
Now my husband does not want Tippy to get any immunizations. I said I will not allow any cat in our house without the rabies shot.
Is it possible that a cat could die from a reaction to a rabies injection?
