I've been looking into the Holistic Select Feline Grain Free lines since they're ingredients are good and the protein/fat/carb ratio is awesome. I opened the Chicken & Lamb today and there appeared to be some white gunk on top and some black specks. Has anyone had any experience with this brand? I worry this is mold.... even though the expiration date is listed for 2018. Or am I just being paranoid?

(I've emailed the company and am waiting to hear back)

I feed a lot of Holistic Select and it seems to work well for my cat. She likes it and it keeps her full enough that she's been able to lose weight.

I haven't seen that white and black stuff in their cans as far as I can remember, but I have seen it in a couple of other brands and I think the reasons have all been that some ingredients like added minerals and vitamins didn't emulsify correctly in that batch, but it doesn't affect the safety or nutritional value. It just looks weird. But it's good to ask the company just to make sure!

I've used that brand a couple of times. Most cans didn't have that but I noticed the last 2 I opened (about a month and a half ago) both had that on top and it was within the food when I dug into it too. I ended up throwing it away because I thought it was mould too. I'm interested to hear their response.

Their CS rep said that the black flecks are the blueberry powder and the white film is 'just juices settling on top during the cooking process'. Basically they said it was safe to eat. I ended up giving it to my cats and they're fine!

The Turkey Pate didn't have this issue so if you wanted to avoid it you could get a different flavor.
