Evening,

I have 2 cats. One is more switched on then the other.
Both cats go out all night every night
I have an outside cat house with maisonette so both cats can have shelter. One cat still can't figure it out. Plenty of dry spots in the garden etc.

Wanted to know people thoughts about leaving 2 cats out all night. I don't have a cat flap, not planning to either. I call them to come home. One cat did, I dried her off and she wanted to go back out. It is tipping down.

I worry about them alot and wondered others thoughts whether it was cruel what I am doing.

I do think you need to get a cat flap at the least. What is your opposition to the idea?

If your cat isn't using the shelter, it's no help that you've provided it. Allowing them to stay out all night in the rain isn't safe or healthy. So, I think it's great that you're letting them do what they want, but I think you need to lay down the law a bit!

I understand stubborn animals.  When I was a kid, I had a pony.  He had a large pasture and had a large shelter.  When the weather was nice he would hang out in the shelter and slept in there.  When it was nasty and raining, he insisted on standing out in the rain trying to look pathetic until we went in and led him to his shelter and gave him some extra grain.  He was only SLIGHTLY spoiled.

I agree with @talkingpeanut.  You need to lay down the law a little bit.  If you had kids and they wanted to stay outside in the rain all night, would you let them?  LOL

Yes I agree that a cat flap would be good.  Would be better not to let them out.  Then you wouldn't have to worry.  Mine were feral and had to learn to like the indoors.  And they did.

My cats are never allowed out at night. Once I have called everyone for their last meal of the day, nobody goes out again nomatter how much they meow at the window.

My cats all come, from wherever they are, when I call "kitties" in a certain voice, because that is the call I use when I feed them. If someone doesn't come, usually shaking the bag of cat treats works.
