Since the cat is so friendly is there a chance you could find a home for it?  Leaving it outside in the cold winter is hard.  Very hard for a cat.  How do you know the cat is spayed?

Yet if you cannot find a home for this kitty, there are lots of shelters you can make for not much money.  First off you do not want to use blankets.  Once wet, they are unable to keep the cat warm and will actually do more harm than good.  You can get a rubber maid box, cut an entrance and exit hole and stuff it with straw.  It needs to be straw and not hay.  Since it is heading into fall, many lawn and garden centers sell bales of hay for decorations.

If you do an internet search on outside feral cat shelters you will find lots and lots.  Here are a few examples of what I have used over the years

The biggest thing you want to remember is that some cats need an exit and entrance so they don't feel trapped inside.  It depends on the cat.  I like to try them with just one hole to start as this method is much warmer.  Yet if you find the cat is not using the shelter, you might then add the exit.  Also never put food in the shelter.  You do not want to attract other critters.  I once had a raccoon take up residence in one of the shelters.
