I have a 2 yr old male Cornish Rex cat and 2 other older female (8 an 12) cats. The male cat keeps having reoccurring chronic upper respiratory infections. We go to the vet constantly multiple antibiotics by mouth and injections butt the infection comes back within a couple of weeks of getting off the antibiotic. I can no longer afford trips to the vet I am at my wit's end I feed a high quality cat food that does not contain fish because I've heard it can cause allergies. I have done multiple searches on the internet resorted to purchasing antibiotics from a website for him but all to no avail. I've been researching the vitamin C and lysine combination for cats it is important to note here that my cat shows no symptoms of being ill other than sneezing he eats he plays he uses the litter box any other cats show no symptoms of the infection ever. I need help any advice would be great as of today I have started the lysine and vitamin C twice a day 500 milligrams of vitamin C and 1000 of the lysine also I've included a Benadryl in the event this is an allergy thanks for your help.

Hello,

My 13 year old girl has trouble with congestion and allergies.  We go to the vet soon and will pin point what is actually going on but when we adopted her they said do not feed her FISH!  As you know, most cat foods contain fish oils.

I can't help with the med aspect of your issue, but I can tell you after researching foods I learned of some lower cost foods that contain no fish oils.

Here are a few listed below.  Please note, I do not serve straight out of the can, I blend with a half can of very hot water to breakdown the fat.

Fancy Feast Classic - Tender Liver & Chicken Feast, Turkey & Giblets Feast, Tender Beef & Liver Feast, Tender Beef & Chicken

Friskies - Country Style Dinner Pate, Mixed Grill Pate

Store Brand - Key Food - Gourmet Turkey & Giblets Dinner, Gourmet Liver & Chicken Dinner

My girl does have crystal issues, so she is mostly on Royal Canin Urinary so but one day a week, I give her one of these to mix it up and for a treat.

I'm sorry I couldn't have been more helpful.  I'm sure you will hear from members who have experience with where to purchase meds.

Welcome to TCS!

HHMMM, Gas! Poor guy.  My gal was a bit gassy with stinky stool, and I started adding a teaspoon of canned plain pumpkin to the blended food, and she is pretty regular and non smelly now.

But please call your vets office to see if these changes are good for him.

I feed Purina good life indoor formula for my cats I am aware of the fish allergy in cats. Fish or fish oil is not a listed ingredient on the bag. Chicken, brown rice, veggies and fruits. They get know other food or treatsomething but that. So I know fish is not problem...

The recurring URI might actuall be pseudomonas.  Here's a thread about it:  http://www.thecatsite.com/t/278001/pseudomonas-aeruginosa

As to the gas , that is probably due to food, which may or may not be related to the other issue.  Have you tried giving him probiotics, to make his gut flora happy?  That might help.  What are you feeding him (besides trying to give no fish).  Is there wheat, corn and soy in his food?
