Hey Internet,

My cat Ruby (indoor/outdoor) recently tried to kill a rather large bird. The bird apparently put up a fight because the next morning, Ruby's face was swollen on one side. Today, she has a visible wound that oozes pus. I'm thinking its possible that there is a piece of the bird's claw or something in there. It doesn't seem to bother her too much, because she lets me put pressure on it with a hot compress, and squeeze some of the pus out. I'm trying to avoid a monstrous vet bill, and I'm wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions of ways I can help heal her at home.

Thanks in advance,

Ruby's Parents

Unfortunately, I do really think she needs to see a vet. Poor kitty!

Ouch! Sorry to hear this!

Seconding what talkingpeanut said... a vet trip is in order. Pus=infection=abscess=antibiotics at the minimum. Times two if you think there's something in the wound. I have MANY years as a vet tech, and MANY abscess treatments in my 'logbook'. There's even a small chance that your kitty might need a drain tube. Not a HUGE chance, but it is a possibility.

This is not something to fool with at home, especially with a face injury. Hope all goes well, and please keep us posted... poor kitty!

Kitty needs antibiotics and only a vet can prescribe. Plus, they can clean the wound to see if there is anything in there. If you wait, you are looking at a monsterous vet bill as it can abscess. That's a nightmare. If you go now, it shouldn't be too bad. Good luck!
