Last Sunday my youngest cat (7/8 years old & neutered), George, was rushed to the vet. He had a blocked bladder and it was a matter of life and death. Now he's recovering but I'm not sure he's doing so well.

He had struvite crystals and was hospitalized and given a catheter. I got him out Wednesday evening with 3 different medications and and some royal canine SO kibble and wet food. George refused to eat his new food so the vet gave the go ahead to feed him his regular wet food WERUVA to avoid any issues with his liver.

Things seemed fine until this weekend, Saturday some yellow discharge came out of his urethra. On Sunday night his peeing became more frequent, every ten minutes after eating and his last prescribed PRAZOSIN pill. I called the vet last night as he'd gone to the litter 6 times in an hour, peeing about a tablespoon each time.

The vet basically told us to come in and buy some of the Hill's food and bring in a urine sample. He warned us he may have an infection again so I'm continuing him on PRAZOSIN since I had left over pills from a previous infection in January.

My main concerns are that he's not going to fully recover or he'll get crystals again and that he's not eating enough. He's a chubby 15lb cat, should be closer to 14lb for an ideal weight, and 4 tbsp of wet food a day cannot be enough. However the vets have not said how much he should be eating or how long it would take to eat as he used to. Also he used to be on kibble - performatrin, so he's not crazy about eating wet food for every meal.

Today we're going to pick up some chicken broth and a water fountain to encourage him to drink more as he's only drinking once a day with his wet food. I add in water sometimes but he's very slow at eating it and seems annoyed that he can't have kibble. I have all my cats separated at the moment so I can monitor George's eating and litter.

If anyone has any other ideas on how to help him fully recover from this stressful ordeal, George would really appreciate it. He's gone through so much and I want him to live at least another ten years!

It sounds like you and your vet are staying on top of George's issues so that is step one in helping him live another ten years!   When it comes to food, you might find this thread interesting - it details much of what's involved in picking out a good food that helps prevent struvite crystals.

The fountain and chicken broth are both very good ideas - I know my Paul loves his fountain and has started drinking a lot more water since it arrived.  If you are also worried that he's not getting enough to eat, you might try getting some chicken or turkey baby food (no garlic or onion) and feeding it to him short term in addition to his canned food. You might even try mixing it in with the canned food.   Many cats can not resist this stuff.  You can also try crumbling some cheese or putting bonita flakes or fortiflora on top of his canned food - these are often very helpful in getting picky cats to eat.

Good luck!  Please let us know how he does!
