Hi everyone, I'm sure this topic has come up numerous times, but I had a question about wormer medications. My cat has had diarrhea(now bloody) for about a week. She also threw up this morning. She still acts completely normal, plays, eats, etc. I know my kitties had roundworms a few months ago, they were treated with profender. I'm thinking she still has roundworms. My question is this, though I know all medication comes with risks, which is the safest wormer medications for cats? Have Any of you used profender? Thank you to whomever replies

Most wormer meds do need a follow up dose 2 weeks from the first.

When there is a substantial infestation of roundworms, it can even take several follow ups, every 2 weeks to fully be rid of them.

Pyrantel is extremely mild, so much that baby kittens can be treated super young, and it is pretty much impossible to overdose this med, so that is what I would use.

You can order pyrantel online and for a good sized bottle it's super cheap.

Try to do this asap so the diarrhea can be slowed then stopped, since if there is now some blood that's the body's way of telling you it is irritated and not happy at all.

Start with dosing him for 3 days straight, then wait 2 weeks, dose again.

I think I would dose one more time to be sure since it's no big deal to do and won't harm him.

I do the 3 days in a row to start anytime a cat or kitten has diarrhea. Often times it fixes it right up, and if not then I know it's likely parasitic.

But all get a follow up dose, and as I said, it's best to dose at least a few times, once he is cleared then dose him twice a year if he goes outdoors, once a year if not.

Tastes like banana!

DRONTAL is the best.

It kills all the worms: round worms, hook worms and tape worms. I get it online at Amazon.com.

Pyrantel doesn't kill tapeworms.

Correct, drontal is good, it is pyrantel + prazaquantel which specifically kills tapeworms.

However she is asking about roundworm med that is the safest, and pyrantel is.

Prazaquantel should not be given unless there are tapeworm segments showing, it is much stronger med.
