My new cat is taunting me with her scratching

Hi, everyone! This is my first post here. I'm a cat parent again after about four and a half years. My partner and I recently brought home a red point Siamese named Freja from a local rescue. She's been adjusting well. She is perfectly quiet during the night, sleeps on the bed at my feet, and lounges on the back of the couch while we watch TV. We have two scratching posts for her of different sizes, materials, and shapes, and she likes to use them.

However, there's one behavioral problem that we can't seem to solve. In the mornings just before I wake up, she likes to scratch at the corner of the wall where our bed is (but only on my side of the bed, not my partner's, and only in the mornings when I'm laying down). We live in a weird log cabin style apartment, so the walls are just stacked logs. I can understand how this material would be appealing for her claws, but this is the only place in the apartment where she scratches the walls. Additionally, we've provided a scratching post in our bedroom, and it's well used, so it's not like she has nothing available to scratch.

The other place she likes to scratch at is our coffee table. It doesn't matter what we happen to be doing in the room (watching TV, cooking, sitting and talking), she will walk up to the table, make eye contact with us, and reach up her paws to scratch at the leg of the table, and it's always the same leg! It's interesting to note that she doesn't earnestly scratch at it either. It's kind of half-hearted like she doesn't really have the urge to scratch but just wants to get our attention and knows she's not supposed to do this. She also has a scratching post in the living room.

She's not starved for attention (I just graduated college, so I'm home with her all day right now. We have multiple play sessions throughout the day), and we invite her up on the couch with us if she wants to be there. This behavior also isn't affected by feeding times as she does it whether she's just eaten or not. I've been searching for an answer to this behavior for weeks now, but nothing has turned up. When she does something we don't want her to do, we clap and say "No!" but this does nothing. I've also tried spraying the wall with a cat repellant, but it doesn't affect her.

While she's not being overly destructive, we're just frustrated and don't know what she's trying to tell us as it only happens under very specific conditions. I know that words like "taunting" aren't the right way to look at cat behavior, but I don't know how else to describe it. Thanks for any insight!

There is a saying, "There is no snooze alarm on a hungry cat."  I suspect that your new kitty has already figured out what time the alarm will go off (cats are experts at this), and just wants to hurry it a bit,  You  usualy feed, right?  I'm guessing that because she scratches on your side of the bed,  If that's the case, the ONLY thing that will work is to utterly ignore the behavior,

Or, the problem could be that cats are very much creatures of habit.  And we have taken them out of their natural habitat, where they can feed themselves.  Therefore, if you want to sleep in one or two days a week, in  your cat's mind, it's OH MY GOD SHE IS NEVER GOING TO FEED ME AGAIN!  MUST GET HER UP AND MOVING!

The alternative is to get up, stagger in, feed the cat, and go back to bed.  This only works on cats that do not thrive on your attention.  Trust me on that.  I've had two cats that I could feed, then nap some more.  The rest have insisted on my presence in their lives once the bed is vacated.  The cat I have now will raise cain until I get up and go TO bed when she's ready, as well.

Cats.  Gotta love 'em.

Freja, your cat has chosen her preferred scratching locations. Get a couple of scratching posts or those inexpensive cardboard scratchers, and put them where your cat likes to scratch. The scratchers can be tilted up at an angle against the wall or table leg. She will will soon prefer the posts of scratchers to the logs and leg. I went through this with Mingo, and it worked like a charm. He will run across the room to scratch on a post.

Thanks for your responses, everyone! Mamanyt, I think the case with Freja is that, like you said, she really thrives on attention. I can go feed her and get back in bed, but she'll finish eating and come scratch at the side of the bed. Haha, so I guess she's like some of your cats! I get really worried about ignoring the wall scratching especially because we're renting our space, and I don't want to upset our landlord.

DreamerRose, I will definitely try your suggestion on getting some scratching posts for those locations! I will pick some up next time I go shopping and see how it works.

Thank you for your suggestions!

My boy does that too. Every morning he'll come wake us up and he'll scratch on the side of the bed, not the wooden bed frame but on the side of the mattress. I have 4 scratch posts for him but he prefer mt two single seated armchair :lol3:
So I guess certain cats are attracted or they have preferred materials for scratching.
It'll be taunting for them if we restrict our kitties too much [emoji]128540[/emoji]
