My 5 month kitty suddenly had some slimy looking urine - like it had some white-ish mucus in it?? What is this?

He recently had a bad case of diahrea, which cleared itself up after a diet of cooked chicken + pumpkin. His diahrea stopped and he had no poop for like 2 days, then had a nice solid poop on the 3rd day. Dunno if this could be related.. His pee has been fine all long though, so don't know what to make of this..  Any advice?

there are a couple things that come to my mind. the most serious of which would be that your boy might be heading towards a (urinary tract) blockage. this can be very serious, even fatal if left untreated, and male cats are much more at risk of this than female cats.

i would strongly suggest having your vet take a look at your boy. only a vet can accurately diagnose the cause of the white-ish mucus in your boy's urine, and treat it. if this were one of my cats, seeing as it's a Sunday where i am, i'd be taking him to the emergency vet. just the potential of a blockage in a male cat, should be treated very seriously.

What causes a blockage?

Could it have been a one time thing? If his next pee is normal should I still be worried?

according to this --  http://www.petmd.com/cat/conditions/urinary/c_ct_urinary_tract_obstruction   article,

'Causes

There are several known risk factors for a urinary tract obstruction including urinary tract stones, urinary disease (particularly common in female cats), and prostate disease (in male cats).

The accumulation of minerals in the urinary tract can also cause the formation of an obstruction (crystals or stones). In addition, tumors, lesions, and scar tissue can lead to an obstruction.'

and from this https://www.acvs.org/small-animal/urinary-obstruction-cats     article,

'...The cause of the inflammatory materials and stone formation it not well understood, though viral infections and diet may play a role...'

so your vet can recommend possible diet change(s) or other things which can help to prevent it from happening again -- if your vet does diagnose a (heading towards a) blockage. i also feel strongly that it's important for us, as cat parents, to do our own looking into about medical issues -- though it's also very important to discuss everything with your vet, as the vet is the one who has the ability to accurately diagnose and treat (as well as learning and experience). bear in mind that looking into medical issues online, we must keep in mind that many medical issues share common symptoms. it's very easy to focus on the worst possible diagnosis, like cancer, when it could just be a relatively minor issue that simply shares a common symptom(s).

honestly, i'd have a vet check your boy. anything abnormal is something that should be discussed with or looked into by the vet. my snick
, who had chronic kidney disease, experienced some urinary tract infections. i never saw any mucus in her urine though. and, anything that needs treating is going to cost less and be treated more easily/quickly if the treatment is started sooner, rather than later.

may i ask -- what type of cat food has your boy been eating (canned, dry, etc)?

Thanks, yes I will call the vet first thing in the morning. Just that it's Sunday here and they're closed.

He's been eating high quality wet food - Bozita and Animonda Carny. But recently, as mentioned, mostly just cooked chicken and pumpkin puree to help with the diahrrea. But I've been slowly mixing his regular wet food back in now with the chicken.

that sounds good! i understand, as i live in a rural area and don't drive -- very hard to get anywhere on the weekends. i'd keep a close eye on your boy though, make sure he's still able to urinate.

Yea I will.. So far it doesn't seem like he is straining or in pain at least.

Just realized he may have had it longer than just today though.. I just switched his litter from Cat's Best Öko Plus (wood based pellets) to a clay-based litter earlier today.. For all I know maybe he's had slimy pee for a while and it just wasn't noticeable in the other litter?? :(

just wondering how your boy is doing this morning...?

yes, he could have been having the 'slimy urine' for longer than you were are of. cats are very good at hiding symptoms of illness, and it might very well not have been noticeable in the wood based pellet litter.

Thanks for the concern!

I called the vet this morning and they basically said, as long as he isn't straining to pee, is peeing a normal amount and is eating/drinking normally it could just be a minor UTI and just to keep an eye on it basically. I collected samples (he went in an empty litter box) the two times he has urinated and it has looked totally normal now with no slime. So I'm thinking it was just something minor that cleared itself up. Either that or something about the clay litter made it look slimy..
