good morning!

another food related question today......

Thinking back through your life -- Are there certain foods that bring back 'fond memories' or that stick out as special or especially tasty?

i'll start!

there are just a couple foods that do this for me. Zaro's bread is one of those. many years ago, my dad commuted to work in Washington, DC each week -- stayed there the work week, and then would come home most weekends. dad took the train, and would transfer in NYC to head upstate -- home. many times, my dad would bring home with him a loaf of Zaro's bread. Zaro's makes incredibly delicious breads, but what i associate their bread with is happiness -- my dad being home again.

the other food would be AV Ristorante Italiano's white pizza. it's simply the best pizza i've ever had.
AV's closed in july of 2007. it wasn't just the food there though, it was the history and the experience!

how about you?

Stuffed Artichokes.

My grandmother made these every time we'd go over to visit, and we didn't visit too often due to distance. It's the first thing I'd smell upon walking into her house.. it had always been my favorite thing to eat at dinner, next to her home made sauce.

Now that she's been gone for 17 years.. every time my mom makes them and I smell them as soon as I walk into her house, I always think back to my grandmother, all the good things with her. it always brings up stories about my grandparents too.

Now I am in tears.. I miss her and my grandfather. (good tears)

"Texas Hash."  Mom made this.  Tomato sauce and paste, rice, bell peppers, onions, ground beef and all sorts of seasonings.  It was very similar to my dad's stuffed green peppers, but not nearly so thick.  More stewish.

I guess the thing I remember the most is the birthday cakes I had as a child. No one decorates them like that anymore. They were the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Dad worked in a building downtown, and there was a custom bakery just around the corner. The day before my birthday, he would bring home a gorgeous white cake. It had roses and my name on it, swags of ribbon icing around the sides, and of course, ruffles at the top and bottom. It made me feel very special.

Tomato sandwiches. As a child the family went down the beach and we always had tomato sandwiches. Somehow they always got sand in them. Yum

Homemade black walnut ice cream.  In this area I very rarely see it in the stores.  I grew up in Kansas and black walnut trees were very common and when people made ice cream it was usually black walnut.

@Denice, every fall, my parents took us black walnut harvesting. They knew a couple who had tons of black walnuts on their property and there was no way they could ever use all of them. We picked up what we could. Took everything home and laid them out to dry. Dad had gloves that he wore to husk them. And he and I would spend hours at night, picking the meat out of the shells. Mom made black walnut ice cream, black walnut cake, black walnut taffy, black walnut candy. And I despise black walnuts with a passion! But the first thing we did when we built our house was to plant a black walnut tree in the side yard. It bears walnuts and I don't use them. We let the squirrels have them. And we have little black walnut trees growing up in the yard from the squirrels digging to bury them.

Hot Milk Sponge Cake. With chocolate frosting. It's something Mom always made for us and I can't make the cake now without thinking of her. My BIL loves this cake and I'll make one and then have my sister and BIL in for dinner. It's a heavier cake than what we're used to having, but it's really good and that frosting just sets it off. I use Mom's recipe for both the cake and the frosting. I remember coming home from school, seeing that cake on the kitchen counter and thinking, "I can't wait until dinner!"

Liver and Onions. Mom made this for my sister and I for our birthday dinners. My birthday is in January; my sister's is in May. She invited both of us to dinner, so we always had it twice a year. The last time we had it with Mom, I went up to the house and I cooked it. We peeled and sliced a ton of onions and the three of us ate 1-1/2 pounds of liver that night. Good stuff.

Lime Pickles. The first time I canned Lime Pickles, the smell in the kitchen took me back decades to when I was a little girl. I remember Mom and Grandma working on Lime Pickles, quarts and quarts and quarts of Lime Pickles.

Grandma's Sugar Cookies and her Sand Tarts. Nobody, but nobody ever made cookies that tasted as wonderful as my Grandma's cookies. I can't make them the way she did. I'll make sugar cookies and I always think of her. And when I make Sticky Buns, I can always hear Grandma saying, "Don't skimp on the cinnamon; you can't have too much!" and I always end up with this brown cloud of cinnamon all over the countertop.

Pineapple preserves. Years ago, I was in a down time in my life. My mom sent me a care package. There were many homemade and home canned things in the box. What I most remember most is the home canned pineapple preserves. I have never had any as good, but eating them always makes me thing of what my mother did for me when I was at one of the worse times of my life.

i know the kind of cakes you're talking about, and they were so pretty! and i think you're right, that no one decorates cakes like that these days.
