Anyone out there have their kitties on prednisone?

I've spoken to my vet today and I have an appointment Monday but I am still perplexed by my boy's behavior.

Normally a cuddly, snuggly kitty, he seems afraid of me. Yet, he will come out for a cuddle at night, let me pat him and snuggle, then, he just 'snaps' and jumps off the bed and hides under it! He can be a scared of things, but was always a 'run to mommy' kinda kitty.

He's been on prednisone for about 2 months now---and I've backed him off his one dose, and will continue to wean him off---but wondering if any prednisone users have experienced irratic behavior with their kitties?

Bandit suffers from megacolon as well so it's hard to massage his bowel if he's hiding from me. He's currently eating well, using the litterbox, but if he sees me, he runs and I can't figure if it's because he's sick of going to the vet or if I hurt him accidentally or what???? Like I said in my other post, on 3 occasions, for different things, I touched him or moved him and he yelped and looked scared and ran off. Friday night he was snuggly with me and I held him, and when I put him back down, he yelped as if something hurt and he's been reluctant to come out to see me ever since. I feel horrid! But, if I feel him chicken he will come out from under the bed and purr and let me hug and pat him----I also did a small bowel massage and felt his whole body over to make sure nothing had stuck him or bit him and he was fine!

Really, really confused.....

Mooch has been on prednisolone for about a year and a half I think.  She hasn't acted like that.  The biggest side effect we've seen is constipation.

Thirteen, my female tuxedo cat, has been on 100 mg for allergies/itching.  She took one pill a night for five nights and then one pill every other night for ten nights.

I've noticed no behavioral differences other than a reduction in scratching.

See, that's the odd thing: My first kitty had to be on prednisone due to skin allergies and she showed NO signs of personality changes. the first time he was on this for pancreatitis, he had an abundance of energy and just ran around the house.

Thanks for your input! I hope we can find out the answer on Monday

I have also begun giving him b-12 shots but I can't think that would cause this....

My 3 year old Maine Coon takes 10mg prednisone on an as-needed basis, which basically means when he has an asthma attack. He can go months without an asthma attack,  and then go on to have one every day,  3-4 days in a row.

I've never seen any behavioral changes at all. He's still the loving, affectionate but EXTREMELY lazy cat he's always been. It could be though because he only takes a pill every once in a while. I know when I was pg with my 11 yr old I was on prednisone throughout the entire pregnancy, and I was a ramped up, ravenously hungry woman til the day I gave birth.

My guy was on prednisone for allergy-related symptoms for around 3 weeks (transdermal cream if that matters). I did see some changes in behavior, but nothing like you're describing. He just seemed restless, he would meow at the door when he normally shows zero interest in going outside, and would pace around the house. He also peed a lot but my vet told me to expect that as a side effect.

After returning from work tonight, he was waiting for me in my porch, as always, but very cautiously. BUT, he did stay out and I didn't make a big deal--just say hi to him like I always do, and then got some chicken from the fridge to reward him. He trilled at me, and looked happy I was home! He stayed out for a bit in the porch as I sat down and fed him and just did stuff on my phone--not making a big deal. I think he liked the front door being open. Anyhow, he even jumped up beside me and nuzzled me and trilled, and I went to find more chicken, but I guess the noise startled him and he ran off. Darn it! He did come back for his wetfood, at a wee bit but darted back under the bed. I put a food and water dish under there.

When I looked at him, he looks sad--like he wants to cuddle but he's just unsure. I swear it's the prednisone.....that or the b-12 shot.  Let's hope the vet can help me tomorrow. I will update everyone tomorrow :)

Our Rascal has been on 1 ml pred, divided into 2 doses daily, for about 9 months. He's still the loving, responsive and alert fella that he's always been, except when he's having an 'episode,' which appears to be painful for him.

My IBD kitty is taking 5 mg of prednisolone a day and has been on a steroid for 5 1/2 years now.  I haven't seen any behavior changes.  The only difference is that he no longer has the severe IBD flares that would sometimes be bad enough to require hospitalization.  The main side effect from long term steroid use is diabetes which usually resolves when taken off the steroid.  Luckily Patches hasn't developed it.  I think it is routine to check blood sugar when a kitty is on a steroid.  I would think that would change behavior.

I have a cat on prednil for allergies. It definitely affects his mood. Any dose change causes him to become aggressive. He will hiss and growl, pick on his fur sister. Changes to behaviour happen both on increase and decrease of his regular dose. If they take it daily it effectively shuts down their adrenal glands so when they get the dose reduced their adrenal glands have to kick back in and release adrenalin (sp?) for themselves which can affect mood. Not all cats will be affected but mine definitely is.

If he's yelping when you pick him up though it could very well be that he's hurting.

I've heard that vit b 12 injections sting when they are injected....can you go a week without and see if it improves his mood ? Good luck ! Its hard to treat our kitties for their illnesses when sometimes the cure seems worse than the illness.

Doc'smom---yep, and exactly a week after no shots, like snapping your fingers, his personality changed back to Mr Cuddly bum. He's in a pancreatic flare still, so I took him to the vet Thursday night and got anitbiotics (he was running a wee bit of a fever) and antinauseant and he then came on my bed and slept!! He hadn't done that in WEEKS!!! (Since the b-12).  I've since been giving him an increase in prednisone for the inflamation in the pancreas and bupernorphine, and tonight just started him on pepcid AC and WOW!! He's such a happy kitty now!!! I have to find some dollarstore bins to put all my cats medication in them and organized, but I can't get over the differnce in him since I gave him the ant-acid! I had suspected he's had acid reflux for awhile now. Heck, when I took the box out of the bag, he nuzzled it as if to say 'get rid of this feeling please!" AWE!!!
