Scotty, who was pretty much my cat and the oldest cat in our family, had to be put to sleep today. He was one of the sweetest cats we'd ever had. He was with us for 11 years. He had a rough start in live for the first year. A older lady who goes to my church called my grandmother because she was concerned over the treatmet of a neighbor's cat, saying they had thrown him against the railing of their porch. I talked my grandmother into saving him from that bad situation. We managed to capture him, after some challenge in getting him to trust us.
He wasn't the most perfect cat. He had some flaws. Litter box aversion more often than not, and peeing where he wasn't supposed to. Grandmother had threatened for years to get rid of him because of this alone. She would often say what a strange cat he was, but I continued to defend him. Much time would be spent cleaning up after him. A weak stomach about every other day. He was also afraid of our other cats who would gang up on him at times in spite of his size. I think much of his problems stemmed from the poor treatment early in his life. However, he had the sweetest, most laid back disposition ever.
For several years he was dealing with some kind of chronic itching condition, which several months ago he started getting steroid shots for. It gave him much needed relief. Unfortunately, because of that he developed diabetes. It was confirmed by our vet, who didn't want to give him another steroid shot. It was realized that insulin wouldn't be feasible because of him throwing up regularly, and his itching all the time and being bullied by the other cats would make him more miserable. Grandmother decided it was time to end his suffering. She took him down to the vet while I was at work this afternoon. I got to see him at the house briefly one last time during my lunch break. He sat very peacefully outside my bedroom door this morning. I wonder if he somehow knew what was going on. I also gave him a good belly rub last night.
Our neighbor how does a lot of work around our house for us was kind enough to bury him with three of our other cats.
It may be a little cleaner around the house, but it's also going to be a bit quieter now without Scotty's constant meowing comments around the house. an him tapping me on the shoulder.
I'll miss him a lot, but I'll be okay, though.
Goodbye, Scotty.
