Okay so I had this cat (a Ragdoll) that had been with me for 9 months before I had to rehome him due to moving out of state soon and going overseas for 3 months. Our nightmare is below....

My cat ( I wish to NOT be contacted by these people, so I will refer to my cat as 'Sam'. That's not his name and not even close but like I said, I do not want to be harassed further by them). Sam* has a medical condition of bladder crystals and recurrent urinary tract infections, this causes Sam* to sometimes urinate on things other than his litter box, this medical condition has been proven by 3 vets so I know that I am not making this up. I got several emails and texts about people wanting Sam*, but after I mentioned the inappropriate peeing and his medical condition all but one person backed out. I wanted to be up front with people and no surprises awaiting for them, anyways after checking a reference number via text and asking about a vet (they said they didn't have one but were looking for one) and asking tons of questions and made them swear to give me back him if they ever couldn't keep him, we made plans one weekend day for them to get him. I charged them $120 (originally asking $185 but they couldn't do that so we agreed on a price of $120), and yes, I am fully aware that that price is technically 'selling' but selling or giving away is all the same; the animal is still being rehomed, purchase fee or not. Anyone that has ever owned a Ragdoll, knows that these are expensive cats. The most money I ever paid for one was from Grand Champion father, from a show breeder, as a show\breeder cat for $1,500 (this is not the same cat). Sam* was from a good, ethical, show breeder and from Champion parents, CFA registered, so I believe $120 was very reasonable - I also gave them his food, food and water bowls, cat litter, toys, all vet records, treats, his collar, etc all basic cat supplies. They had him for 2 months before recently giving me him back, they actually sort of demanded I get him back. I got him back and then they demanded I refund the $120 AND all of the costs they did associated with owning a cat! They never admitted to taking him to the vet so it was never a large cost. He was neutered and front paws declawed by his first owner (I am his second owner) and I updated his booster vaccine and rabies vaccine (required in my state yearly or be given a 3 year rabies vaccine depending on the protocol and the vet) so there was very minimal cost for them.

After I politely declined refunding their money, they fed me a line of total bullsh*t about him being 'oh so difficult' and expensive. Were you expecting a free pet? They kept everything of his except for his food and water bowls. What is the reason to keep vet records on a cat you don't have?

The night I got him back, I immediately knew this was not the same cat I use to know. He use to be so friendly, loving, social, playful, typical Ragdoll personality. This was not so. He was hiding, hissing, growling, and almost whimpering, I tried to pet him after he calmed down some, only for him to lash out and just barely missing my wrist for a bite. Not to mention when I pick him up to let him out of his cat carrier I brought, he scratched me with his back claws and struggled to get free and then jumped out of my arms and fled under my bed (keep in mind this was once the same cat that loved to lounge around my shoulders while I cooked, read, slept, etc). After I got out of the shower that night and was about to go to sleep, I was setting my morning alarm for tomorrow and as I was doing that I got a text from his old owners who just gave me him back and they said (in exactly these words) "That cat was loving on me before he left so maybe its you!!!!!!!". This was 10 o' clock at night! And, they further harassed me.  The next day, he let me start to pet him without looking at him (that freaked him out more) and as I was petting him, I noticed a big bruise\mark above his right eye and looking through his fur were streaks\ red marks. By then I had come to the conclusion that they had hit and maybe kicked him. They texted me that night too to say that I am a lier and a deceiving con artist.....ummm how? Do you think that was a con artist action?

Please help.....what should I do?

Not at all. You were up front with these people and it was THEIR choice to give him back .(thank God he is back with you) The first step would be to have those bruises and red marks documented, maybe you could get a vet to come to your house, it would be less stressful. After the bruise is documented you can inform them you are notifying the police about animal abuse and for them to leave you alone. You can block their number too, although it may be a good thing to know what they have planned, if they plan on suing you, etc, (which I highly doubt, I think they are all bluster. ) You might inform them that you had to spend money to to a vet to inspect and treat the bruises, so THEY owe you. It sounds like they are the con artists. I think they thought they could keep the cat for a while, get their money back plus more for their 'inconvenience'. The next time you talk to them I would get very insistent that they have abused your cat, you can prove it , and for them to leave you alone. But the only way to do this is to have that documentation. If they do take you to court(which I highly doubt) make sure you show up, because I have a feeling they won't and you would win that way. My heart goes out to you, but especially for that precious cat. He has obviously been through a horrible experience and is very stressed out to lash out at everyone. He will settle down, but not without considerable patience and lots of love. I would keep him confined to one room when he is not with someone to confine the urination to one spot, hopefully somewhere easier to clean, and have a good enzyme cleaner on hand for the odor. After this nightmare I can't imagine trying to re-home him will be any easier, I really hope you can keep him with you where he belongs. I'll pray for you both, all the luck!

Thanks! I have not heard from them since. I also blocked their number and sweet Baloo (his real name) is doing good. [emoji]128526[/emoji]

Th
Beautiful cat. Thank God, he got away from those awful people before the worst happened.
Thank you:-) He is handsome. I feel so terrible for letting him go to them. But its in the past. Not everyone appears who they are though and unfortunately, Baloo and I learned that the hard way.

Poor little Sam/Baloo. He may be suffering from FIC - Feline Idiopathic Cystitis. That means whenever he's stressed, his bladder gets inflamed which leads to peeing outside the box. I expect he'll be experiencing an episode now (if he's not already).

My heart goes out to him. In my book, ethical breeders only sell cats under a contract which says you cannot declaw them and also that if there are any problems, the cat must be returned to them. The plight of purebred cats like Sam/Baloo is that people want to have "a Ragdoll" without caring too much about the cat's well-being or being truly committed to giving him good cat care. It becomes a status symbol and if the cat has any issues (and FIC is a great example), he may be subjected to more stress, being moved from one home to another and possibly being subjected to abuse.

Will you be able to keep him now? Are you still going overseas and need to rehome him? I think you did everything that could have been done in terms of providing full disclosure. I think that if you were to rehome him again, I would absolutely ask for references by a veterinarian of a local rescue organization before placing him in another home. Also, if you have an adoption fee (and you should - even if you end up donating it to a local shelter) then there's no haggling over that. Anyone who can't afford the extra $65 should not buy a cat to begin with.

Here's some more information about how to screen potential adopters -

We also have a few experienced rescuers who can help you with screening future potential adopters.

Poor little kitty! My heart breaks for what he must have went through with those awful people. Honestly, some people should not be allowed to have animals. I am so glad he is doing well now. I truly hope he can stay with you, as you obviously love him so much. Yes, you are so right. Sometimes you can not tell how a person truly is. Also, Baloo is a beautiful kitty and so sweet looking!

Yes, Baloo will be staying with me. In the rare event that he must be relocated, he will go back to his first owner who loves him a lot and I am still in touch with them.

I feel so bad for him. People are so mean. :-(

Wow, what an ordeal.  Baloo is a special kitty.

I know you said he's with you and he will go to original owners in the event something should happen.  However, if you are in the North East USA, my door is open.

My apartment is small, but we love love love cats and would keep him safe for your return.

People here can vouch for me on how much I care and love my babies.

I wish you and Baloo all the best.  I hope he puts that in the past as well.

Hope & my girl Chestnut

Oh, he is so precious looking!
I love when kitties show their tummies, their fur is so soft looking. It still makes me cry to think of anyone hurting him. Just so happy that he is safe now with you.
Please cuddle Baloo for me and pet that sweet little tummy.
He is just too precious!

My husband is a veterinarian, one of the complaints he hears most often is " l think my pet was abused". He thinks they're wrong 95% of the time.

My vet agrees that he was abused. He has a huge bruise above his eye and marks on his body. Not to mention his behavior....but thank you for your reply..
