It has been nearly three weeks since I found baby, an injured feral kitten under my porch. Last night as i was going out to feed my semi feral porch cat I was greeted by a bigger version of my baby. Torties are not common strays around here and she is much too big to be a litter mate, so im guessing shes mommy. She is very friendly ( she jumped in my lap the minute i sat down) and healthy (no scabs, clean, no earmites) but very skinny and boney. She doesnt seem interested in eating though. She gags on dry food, almost looks like shes going to hack up a hair ball. She will eat wet food, but never finishes it and loses interest in it quickly. What could be wrong?

My guess is that she belongs to someone in a somewhat sort of way. In other words, someone is givivg her food, and maybe even letting her in the house, but doesn't know that she needs to be treated for worms.

I think you may be right.. she immediatly ran into my house when i opened the door and made herself at home.. I already have her daughter, so I guess mommy is staying too.. now to deworm her. Shes yet to want outside and actually runs away from the door when its opened. Even if she has another home, they obviously don't mind much where she is. Or she wouldn't be on my porch looking starved when she is more than happy to be indoors (and litter box trained). She's obviously not fixed and as far as I know she's stray. I had her kitten at the vet today, i'll be making her appointment tomorrow.

Baby ran right up to her and momma, now named snickers immediatly pinned her and started bathing her. I'm not going to just throw her back out. I'll keep an eye out for lost cat posters, but unless someone clearly looks for her, she's found a permanant indoor home.

This is a very sweet story. I hope you will be able to keep them both!

This thread has turned a somewhat crappy day into a good one.

Thanks for taking care of these two cats.

UPDATE

Snickers (Momma) is in active heat, I made her vet apointment. The vet can't see her for two weeks and refuses to spay her until she is at a healthy weight, due to concerns over in her current situation if she will be able to endure surgery. According to my kitchen scale with her in a bowl, minus the weight of the bowl she weighs less than 2 lbs currently. Sadly, less than her kitten weighed in the same bowl on the same scale.

She seems to love her daughters dry kitten food, so I have left her a bowl of that, as well as dry cat food down constantly and giving her wet food. Getting wormer in her has been a struggle. She refuses to touch the wet food it has been added to. Tonight I will attempt it in tuna (Shes a night eater).

My semi feral porch girl had quite a fight with a tom last night, but shes a bully in general
She takes pride in hunting our resident raccoons.. Ill be keeping an eye out for injuries shes up to date on shots. Bringing her in the house is asking to have my skin shredded until I put her back out..They smell snickers I'm sure, because kiki is spayed. I suppose I could take the opportunity to catch some of those little buggers. TnR is not a thing here, but we do have low cost clinics and its for the greater good.

It's brilliant that you will now take care of mom & her kitten! I think maybe why she didn't eat from you at 1st is that she had been dumpster diving and, though skinny, maybe wasn't that hungry. I fed a stray female in our backyard for 2 months before having her adopted. It was a long time before she would eat any food from me even though she obviously did not have a home.

Your momma shied away from the open door because she thought you were going to force her outside.

In what way was her kitten injured? How old was the kitten when you found it?

The kitten is about 3 months old max according to the vet. She had severe trauma to her face that can not be fixed very well the left half of her bottom lip is gone, gums completly exposed and her upper fang is broken off at the gums on that same side. Xrays showed both of her front legs were fractured as well, but are healed. I have no clue what happened to her, as i found her that way, but the vet says her injuries are consistent with hitting the ground at a fast rate and face first, or laments terms she appeared as if she had been thrown from a moving vehicle, or a significant height. Here is a picture of the injury, she is currently on antibiotics for the infection and scheduled for surgery to do what can be done about it. She is eating and doing well despite her state. The resemblence to her mother is striking, no?

Holy crud, poor little thing. Yes, definitely her momma's kid. I can't believe how nice you are to take care of both of them.

I can only wonder where the rest of her kittens are, or if they suffered the same fate as baby and perhaps didn't make it. As happy as Snickers was to see baby it seems odd that there were no other babies with her.
