Let me apologize right from the start about the length of this post.

For the last 10 months or so there has been a cat roaming around our house. We live in the woods with very few neighbors. She didn't come to close at first because we had a black lab up until the fall when we had to put him down. He was 16. :(

Approximately 8 weeks ago, while I was grilling, the momma strutted right up onto the deck and started weaving between my legs and purring. I pet her and she rolled right over for a tummy rub. Not being a cat owner, I only had tuna, so I gave her some and some water. A few days later she came back and brought with her a kitten. The cutest little version of herself! They are tortoise.

Since then my husband and I have been feeding them and spending time outside playing. As I stated the momma is very friendly. The kitten (we estimate 8 weeks old) is still quite skittish. He/she will play with toys and even sits on my husbands foot. At this point we are still unable to pet except when he/she is eating.

Again..I'm sorry for the length of this post but I felt I needed to give some back round in order to get the best advice.

I contacted a DNR today and they are sending an application. I was told it will take approx. 2 weeks for the momma cat to get an appt. We wont be trapping her in a trap though because she will let me pick her up. They are going to do the kitten at 5 months. She did say she would talk to me about worming and vaccinating the kitten when I take momma in for her visit.

I have an extra bedroom that I will empty out and refill again with cat trees, beds, scratchers, litter boxes etc. I was just wondering what to expect since they have been outdoor cats for so long. I don't want to traumatize them with such a big change.

Are there any sicknesses they may have that I should be worried about since they won't see a vet for 2 weeks or so. You should note that I did see evidence of tapeworms on the mother and I gave the mother and kitten 1/2 pill of Bayer Expert Care Tapeworm Dewormer and have seen no evidence of tapeworms since. I also gave them both 1/2 teaspoon of Nemex-2 for roundworms and there bellies are no longer swollen. We also ordered 2 Seresto flea & tick collars so we can get rid of as many fleas & ticks as possible before bringing them inside.

I welcome any advice you have as we plan on making these adorable fur balls members of our family.

First of all, thank you for helping these two!  Your plans sound very good.  It sounds as if Mama was at some point someone's pet, so she may have very little adjustment.  She will probably not object to the luxury accommodations you describe.  The kitten may have an adjustment but  wouldn't be surprised if she settles right in, too.

Spaying them will calm them down considerably, as well.   If there is a way to bring them in as soon as possible, I would.  Mama is very likely to get pregnant again.  It would not be unheard of for the kitten to go into heat before five months.  So the sooner they are inside, the better.

I would only be careful with the flea collars.  They are sometime too harsh and may cause the cats to be ill.  Is there a way you can get one of them to the vet's?  He or she can give your Revolution, which is a good, all-purpose flea/tick killer/wormer.  It is applied to the back of their necks.

If they had tapeworms, they definitely have fleas, so getting them cleared of those is paramount.  You may be able to bath Mama - regular blue Dawn dishwasher soap is a great flea killer.

We should have them inside within a few days. I want to be certain the room is absolutely safe before bringing them in. I'm not sure if the vet we used to take our dog to will see her sooner than the DNR clinic but I will call and ask. Momma cat brought me a present this morning. While I'm glad she wants to show me some love I really don't want any more gifts so I will get them inside ASAP. We will try giving momma a bath. Hopefully it goes well. Thank you for responding so quickly!

BTW - make sure there is no furniture for them to hide under or behind.  Give them hidey holes (carriers or boxes with a blanket).

Glad to hear they're coming in soon.

Update:

Momma and kitty have been inside in their own room for almost 2 weeks now. We have been leaving them roam the house ("supervised" an hour or so a day) so they get used to their new surroundings. Momma visited the vet yesterday to be spayed (unfortunately she was pregnant again), vaccinated etc. She received a clean bill of health. Mia is scheduled for her visit 3 weeks from now.

They are both adjusting to their surroundings very well. The kitty has become quite the character.

I will post pictures of them and their room a little later as momma is still a bit mopey from her surgery.

Thanks to this site I am now confident that I can give these two adorable cats a very happy and safe life inside.

I am sorry Momma was pregnant already but you have done them such a great service.  Here's to many, many years of happy, inside life!

Thank you so much for sharing this happy ending and for helping them both.

Wow! Momma and her baby have an impressive playroom. They are two lucky kitties. Not only do they have luxurious accommodations, but they now have caring, loving responsible guardians [emoji]10084[/emoji]️

Thank you all for the awesome replies! I really just want to give them a great life. The vet estimated mommas age to be about 4 yrs old. That made me sad to think she spent so long fighting to survive. Now she has us to fight for her. :)
