I've posted a few times but have not properly introduced myself. I am a volunteer at a large municipal open shelter. This means by law, we are required to take in any surrenders, strays or otherwise unwanted pets. It can be heartbreaking sometimes also but very rewarding. I am also a foster mom to kittens there. When a kitten comes in less than 3 pounds it goes to foster care until it is of adoption-ready weight. I love fostering kittens and have fostered about 180 so far. I started out fostering seniors but each one was a foster failure with me ultimately adopting them. I knew this could not go on so I tried kittens and fell in love with the process. I am almost never tempted to keep them because they get SO rambunctious at about 3 months old - prime adoption age! When they start pinging off the walls it's time to say "have a happy life, baby!"
Aside from the shelter and fostering, I am a wife and gardener. I enjoy tending my 1-acre yard and woodworking (I've made lots of outdoor furniture like adirondack chairs and benches, birdhouses and rabbit cubbies). I retired from the US Navy after serving 21 years. My days as a retiree are busier now than they have ever been with the shelter, home, yard and fostering!
