Sorry if this has been addressed! I'm new here and I took in 4 month old kittens who now have fleas again(Advecta)didn't work long and now I discovered these brown rice spots where they lay! I mortified! I can't afford hundreds of dollars in vets visits. Is there a good all worm medicine I can get OTC? Will these hurt me and my kids? I've never dealt with this before. Will my kittens die? I want something I know will work and fleas meds too? Thank you for reading

Yes, you can get Tradewind Tapeworm Tabs, they work just fine. Follow the dosing instructions carefully. Some flea meds have become ineffective in certain areas. Try a different kind, maybe Frontline if Advecta (which is the same as Advantage) doesn't work for you. Avoid brands with pyrethrins (natural or synthetic), as those are pretty toxic and have a high rate of side effects.

Hello @Rallton  I see that I am not that far from you. I know her vets can be outrageous with just the office call. I use Banfield in Grovecity. They have a wellness plan that I pay 32-33 a month and it includes all of their shots for a year, a few wormings, the testing for diseases, and Revolution flea medicine. The good thing is when they get sick you don't have to pay for a sick visit and medicine is at a discount.

Thank you, Louann, I will definitely lookinto this program and its only 20 min from me.

Thank you, Willowy I will check out Tradewinds and get a different flea medication for them.

This stuff is just gross and I feel terrible if they have had this for awhile and didn't realize it!

Do these brown rice looking spots hurt humans? My kids are ffeaking out thinking they are going to get sick now?

No they will be ok just make sure you wash your hand good. My Lil Bit had them when she was pregnant and had them a few weeks before I could get her to banfield. My toddlers played with her daily and we all are fine.

It's very common for adopted kitties to come complete with fleas and tapeworms, especially if they haven't been in a foster care situation or rescue.  Know that it will take more than one application of the flea meds to completely rid your kitties of fleas and it will take more than one deworming due to the life cycle of the tapeworms.  You will also want to vacuum regularly and wash their bedding as often as possible to keep the fleas at bay.

Capstar and Drontal worked for us. My Misha had tapeworms awhile ago. I gave her the Capstar, steam mopped my floors, then gave her the Drontal later that night and now we have no more fleas.

I get the generic Capstar and Drontal off of Amazon.

I just realized I didn't say what Capstar and Drontal do, so in case the OP didn't already know or hasn't already looked it up, here is what they do.

Capstar kills all fleas on your pet within 24 hours. It starts working immediately. This medicine is a Godsend! I live in a rural area so all it takes for me is to go out and water my shrubs or even get the mail at the mailbox, and I will bring in at least one flea with me. It never fails. lol  The half-life of this medicine is 8 hours. Basically, it does its job and exists your pet's blood system quickly. It will not kill the flea larvae though, so steam mop your floors if possible, or treat your environment for them. Wash any pet bedding or blankets etc that they sleep on. I personally steam mop daily starting in July because of flea season. In fact, I just did this morning. Otherwise, even though my cats will never be outside, one of us will bring a flea in just because of the nature of where we live.  I'm not a fan at all of pesticides in general because of the associations with it and neurological conditions in humans, which is why I won't put pesticides on my lawn, period. So that leaves me the only option of Capstar and mopping.

Drontal kills the tape worms. It works fast as well. I used it and then give one more dose 3 weeks later.
