Your mom is probably doing what she thinks is best for the mama cat and her kittens. I did not handle my kittens except for weighing them until they were bigger.

It all depends on the momma cat. If you have a good relationship with her then she should welcome you touching and picking up the kittens. But some mother cats get very defensive and the important thing is not to upset her. It is a good thing for the kittens if you can pick them up and get them used to being handled as soon as possible - I have usually done this from a day or two old. Not all the time, and never allowing children to pick them up as they are easily squeezed too hard, but a few times a day, with momma watching, and to weigh them and examine them to be sure they are developing properly. And they get used to human smell and touch very quickly at a very young age. If your mom does not want you to pick them up, perhaps she would allow you to stroke them gently, especially around the ears, as long as their mother is fine with it.

You got excellent answers.

And the answers depends a little on exaclty what you mean.

Normally, its good, proper and wise to handle the kittens some - weigh them, get a quick look see how they are faring...  If they perhaps got fleas...  Dont overdo it the first weeks, so not to stress momma, but  so you have the contact and knowledge.   It depends some on the momma.  Some are very defensive. Others beg you to help take care of the kittens, be the co-momma...

So its important anything you do, you must do respectfully. Do it near the litter, so momma sees there is no danger...

And as said, let smaller children wait, and or make very sure they are careful. Be there with them...
