Hi, I'm Jessica. Quite a few years ago I was active on some cat forums. I can't remember if I was active on this one or not, if I was I had a completely different user name which I can no longer use. I thought I'd pick up the hobby of chatting with other cat lovers again.

I have had 2 cats for 13 years, Rosie and Spotty. Both were estimated to be about 2 years old at the shelter when I adopted them but either one could have been older or younger. I just lost Spotty to kidney disease. This cat who loved to eat and used to be quite chunky suddenly lost a ton of weight and began drinking an enormous amount of water. My choices were to either have him put to sleep or put him through aggressive medical treatment which would not have prolonged his life for very long and would have caused him a great deal of suffering. So I made the heartbreaking decision to end his suffering. He was a sweet, affectionate cat who loved to be picked up and held and carried around like a baby and he would lean into me and purr a lot. He gave head butts and insisted on sleeping next to my head every night. He was quite friendly to everyone who was not a veterinarian but anyone who was a vet got the hisses and growls. Of course he was just scared. I miss him terribly but instead of crying too much I want to be grateful for what I still have.

I still have Rosie,my female blue eyed brown and white kitty who is still healthy in her old age. She doesn't like to be picked up but she is still sweet and quite beautiful. I want longevity for her. I would love for her to live 20 plus years, I know it's not a guarantee but I want to at least try my best to make it happen for her and perhaps you can all help me achieve this. I don't feed dry food anymore. When I had both cats I fed a combination of dry and wet for economy sake, feeling guilty now. Maybe Spotty would have had a longer life if I didn't feed the dry food. I recently learned that I should stop buying fishy cat foods because the mercury and phosphorous amounts are high and can raise the risk of health problems and just recently I started learning about carrageenan. Well, for now I still have fishy canned cat foods and poultry-based canned foods with carrageenan in my cupboard which Rosie has eaten for years and it hasn't affected her but at least for the next cat food shopping trip I'll make an effort not to buy any more of those. I have also made the decision to give Rosie a meal of Nature's Variety Instinct raw food 3 or 4 times a week. I have both the rabbit and chicken in my freezer.

Damn the pet food industry which cares so much more about making money than the health and wellness of our pets. And isn't it ironic that a company called "Wellness" uses carrageenan in their pate formulas.

Just a Mod Note in case this thread looks weird to anyone reading it. Jessica's posts have been switched to her old account, moggiegirl. :)
