My beautiful Arista left us yesterday. She went in Tuesday for dental work, she seemed to be still drowsy from the anesthesia , I gave her pain meds ( buprenorphine) which seemed to have a horrible effect on her. I'm afraid the dose was too much?, she couldn't stand on her feet, would just fall over. She would meow like she was stressed, her breathing was slow, she wouldn't eat or drink. Thursday I took her to the vet, they said she was dehydrated, and body temp was too low, they just wanted to hook her up to IV so I left her to get help. An hour later I got a call, she vomited blood all over, and had to be intibated. Her heart rate went low. And she had a heart attack. How did this happen?! My heart is broken!!!... She went in for a broken tooth to be pulled. And passed from a heart attack?!, pre bloodwork was done. I was told the procedure was safe for her. Why would her body temp drop and she vomit blood? Could this be over dose related?! Can anyone offer me insight? My happy 10yr old girl who would great me when I woke up in the am, and when I got home from work is now gone. What went wrong?!

I can not offer any insight as to what went wrong because I have not dealt with dental issues in any of my cats.  I am very sorry for your loss and just wanted you to know that someone saw your post and cares about the suffering you are going through. One of my friend's lost a young healthy cat to a heart attack in his sleep.  He had been to the vet earlier in the week for a check-up and everything was fine.  Her vet told her that sometimes heart problems do not present symptoms that are easy to pick up on.  Perhaps your cat had an issue that did not show up in the blood work before the dental work was done.  Hugs to you during this very difficult time.

I also can't offer any insight as to what happened to your Arista but I wanted to offer my deepest condolences. I'm so sorry for your shocking loss. Know that your girl is at rest and in peace now. I hope that in time you will find some peace as well.

I'm very sorry about your loss. It must have been an awful shock to lose her after a routine procedure.

First I want to say I am so sorry for your loss, and want you to know you are not alone in your grief. Losing a companion and family member is so hard, it leaves an emptiness in your life that is overwhelming at times. I am not a vet, but would venture to say your sweet girl had an undetected heart problem that contributed to her  not being able to handle the stress of surgery. There was no way to detect this problem without testing before, and with no symptoms it was not performed. Please don't blame yourself, there is no way you could have known about this, it was not in your control at all. You were trying to improve her life, under the supervision of a vet, what you decided was dictated by your love and concern for her welfare.

Your sweet Arista would be the last one to hold any blame for you, she loved you above all else and only wants the best for you in the future. You gave her ten years of love, and a home full of caring and happiness, she could ask for no more. I will never understand why bad things happen to good people, and we will never find the answer, but I know that precious girl was in your life for a reason,  and you must concentrate on the good she brought in to it, not dwell on the end which brings nothing but heartache and misery. To have never known her at all would have been such a  great loss in your life's order. You will hold her dear in your loving heart and she will be with you forever, the bond you have will NEVER be broken, use it and your precious memories to comfort yourself and she will send you her love for the rest of your life.

I will cry with you for the loss of such a sweet and beautiful girl, I'll keep you both in my thoughts and prayers. Thank you for letting us know of her so that many shall mourn her passing as is only right.   Only time will help to soften the anguish, try to distract yourself from bad thoughts and bring sunshine back into that heart that is now the home for the piece of hers that she left for you when she took a piece of yours. May you be blessed for hurting so bad from loving so much, my heart weeps for your pain, take care......RIP you sweet, precious girl. The world of the one who loves you so much is a darker place with your passing.  Please let the beautiful pure light that is your star in the heavens above shine down on the one who misses you so much, you will never be forgotten!

Thank you so much.that brought tears to my eyes but made me feel better at the same time. I still have two cats, they didn't see her pass, they only saw us leave with her and not come back. That's heartbreaking too, will they look for her when I let them outside or do they know? If only cats could talk:(
Thank you again, everyone who has sent thier condolences. It's funny how comforting you can feel from messages from strangers yet feel the compassion and caring from their words. I'm glad I joined this sight, there is a lot to be learned.

I am very sorry to read this horrible news, such an awful thing to happen to her and you. It is similar to 2 weeks ago when we lost Skipper, a seemingly healthy 8 year-old cat who just started crying and crying for who knows why, we took him to the vet, they couldn't find anything major wrong, gave him a few shots and we brought him home, he was crying yet the next morning and we just thought it would take a day or so for the medicine to work, but we came home that night and found him dead.....

We, like you, will probably never know what happened, and it is very easy for both of us to think it was something that the vet did, and it very well may have been, but it also could have been a hidden problem, remember, cats are masters at hiding illness until it is usually too late, so in both our cases something may have been wrong but we didn't know it, and it just happened unfortunately. But it is devastating to have to go through such a horrible ordeal, my wife and I send hugs and support your way, and she told me to tell you about Smoke, our first cat who was a stray that we took in many years ago, and she had just been to the vet about two weeks earlier for a checkup and died from a heart attack at home at only about 5 years old. We never know what life is going to throw at us, but the people on here know and understand 100% what us cat lovers have to deal with and are a GREAT help....

God Bless, may your heart heal with time....

Rest in peace sweet girl, you were loved very much here and well taken care of and your mommy WILL see you again one day......

I am truly sorry for your loss of your sweet Arista. How devastating and so tragic! I wish I had some magic words to help heal your pain. The vet says my kitty may need some dental work, but I am so terrified of losing him. I can surely understand your shock as to what happened to your kitty. I am so, so sorry for the pain you are going through. Just know that you loved Arista and gave her a loving, warm home. You cared for her and she loved you in return. I hope that you can one day think of your sweet Arista with more smiles than tears.
RIP Sweet Arista!
You were so loved and are so very much missed!!
