Ok so about two weeks ago I noticed my cat not eatting or drinking so I took her to the vet and she had pancreatitis. Well her medications finished on Sunday 8/7/16 she finished her antibiotics and pain killers . She started eatting a little not much but a little so I went on vacation(that had already been paid for) and left her with my parents and I've been gone for 2 days and just got a text from my parents saying she hasn't eatten anything. Any advice on how they can get her to start eatting. She's not in pain anymore since she's not hiding she's out in the open.

Hi Ashley, welcome to TCS!

I can imagine how worried you must be to hear this news while traveling.  Is she home or at your parents? Sometimes an environment change can affect their appetite also.

It is important, as I'm sure you know, to get your cat to eat, and drink.  There are several things your parents can try:

Warm up the food (if wet food, which hopefully it is)

Try a different type of food. Sometimes, when a cat is ill they might associate their old food with being ill.  Offering something new could do the trick

Use "toppers";such as  freeze dried chicken or fish (easily available at a pet store; we use PureBites).  Another one is bonito flakes; fishy fishy, cat crack.

If not drinking either, try adding some tuna juice to the water.

Offer meat based baby food with no additional ingredients.  Just plain protein, no onions or garlic should be in the formula.  While not for long term use since it lacks the nutrients cats need it can help them get over the initial hump of not eating.

If all else fails, the vet can administer a drug which will increase the appetite.

Here's a good thread where many members discussed their tips and tricks. Perhaps you can send this to your parents to read through.  Let us know how it goes!

Hi there she is drinking a lot which is great because she's been dehydrated . However I live with my parents since I'm only 21 and still in school for nursing. She kept turning her nose up to all the food that was fishy but she would eat chicken so I switched them all up. I was giving her pills inside her food for an upper respiratory infection when my dad stepped on her and caused her to stress which caused pancreatitis

Pancreatitis can cause diabetes. If that happens, her blood sugar could be high, causing her to have an upset stomach. Then she won't eat, which makes the nausea and glucose levels out of control, and she is at risk for fatty liver syndrome. This is all life-threatening stuff. I would have your parents take her to the vet immediately. Have the vet test blood glucose and anything else associated. Your parents will have to syringe feed her to get her necessary calories in each day until she eats on her own. Cats CANNOT skip eating, because their bodies go haywire and they can die very quickly from the complications.

I don't want to scare you, but it's serious and you should know what you might need to look for.

B-12 shots---my boy just started getting them and what a difference it makes! He's near the end of it's effectiveness and is starting to act a little blah, but he gets his shot Monday morning (I'm going to start giving them to him) He's eating, but more nibbling.

Also, sub-cue fluids--pancreatitis is very painful---just dealing with my two kitties 3rd round (they are littermates). I had to give my cats a bevvy of meds to get them back to eating:

sub-cue fluids

anti-nauseant

appetite stimulant

prednisone

Prednisone is also key for the inflammation. Very import for kitty.

I hope kitty feels better soon!!!

Ok update: I am home and have syringe fed her for two days she had pooped a little I'm getting really upset and cry bec I don't wanna lose her. I can't afford to take her to the vet again. The appitie stimulants they did already and don't work she wasn't hungry. I noticed this morning she had a hard time pooping and was rubbing her butt on my carpet and left poop stains so I cleaned them up then got a baby wipe and got her butt and noticed a little red not a lot but however she was constipated at one point so maybe it's clearing it's self.
She used to weight 15lbs then got sick and when I left she has gained back enough to be 8lbs but now 6lbs. How much should I syringe feed and what kind and for hold long before I try to place food down. There's not vomiteing and she's not hiding so she's not in pain.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you. Precious had a wonderful, loving life with you. You cared for and comforted her when she was in need and I have no doubt that she was grateful. Please take comfort in knowing that Precious is no longer in pain.

I'm so sorry that you lost Precious. Sometimes what we can do for them is not enough and they slip away from us anyway. Rest in peace little Precious. :rbheart:
You may find it comforting to post a tribute thread for her at The Bridge when you're ready to do so.
This thread will be closed now as per TCS policy when the cat has passed away.
