 Hello all

I just had a few questions about a 7-8 month old cat I adopted a few days ago. I'll be taking him to a local animal clinic later but they can't see him until 7PM EST, so figured posting here in the meantime could *possibly* put my mind at a bit of ease, as I'm a bit worried.

Anyway, this past Sunday I went to the local animal shelter as it was "free cat day". Since their shelter was overpopulated with cats, for 3 days they gave away cats / kittens with all of their shots, free of charge. I found a 7 month old cat that had an exam on the 7th, wasn't on any medications and given a clean bill of health.

On Sunday, prior to me going to the shelter, the cat was given a rabies FVRCP vaccine and had a Vectra procedure (w/ pyrantel pamoate). Because I adopted him, he was then neutered the following day (Monday) and released to me that evening.

Since bringing him home, he is panting excessively and has a very fast heart rate and I'm wondering if he's still just stressed out from all of the recent procedures ONTOP of getting use to a new home / surroundings, or if there's some other underlying issue.

He's eating like a horse and I'm letting him (for now) since he was rather skinny when I got him (6.47 pounds). He's normal sized in a sense but I don't know, he seems way 'longer" then a standard cat, if that makes any sense. Anyway, i've been giving him plain grilled chicken breast & wet cat food twice a day and also an additional chunk of chicken here and there, which he gobbles up. He's also drinking water and he's definitely having no trouble using the liter box.

It seems that his heart is beating really fast most of the time. He'll stand next to me with his mouth wide open, tongue hanging out and meow in between the panting. When he was neutered, he was given a "cocktail mix" anesthetic of Telazol, Torbugesic & Dormitor (0.03 ml/kg Intramuscular.

I'm in a 2 bedroom apartment that is rather hot. We have AC window units in 2 of the rooms, with 1 always being turned on. The cat tends to lurk around the apartment most of the time and not necessarily just stay in the rooms that are air conditioned, so I suspect he may be overheated but i've seen him pant / stick his tongue out even while in the AC.

I noticed that he has a patch on his belly that had been shaved, with 2 greenish adhesive looking things on what look to be some sort of incisions. I'm not sure why they would be there? Is that where he was given shots / anestesia? At first I thought they mistook him for a female and tried to spay him...but what do I know.

Anyway, is this all just normal behavior given his recent procedures? Upper respitory infection?

I really hope I can bring him back to good health soon.

How hot is it?
Is the shelter reputable? If he had anything wrong they should have told you.

It sounds like a similar situation to my boy. Mine pants and meows at me, but he gets overstimulated at times and it's hot with no air conditioning here. We've had a couple of cooler days and he's not panted recently. It's worth getting him checked out but it's probably as you say.

What happened when you took him in for his Vet appointment.  Panting is definitely NOT normal, nor is a consistent fast heartrate, nor are those bandages on his belly.

But a good appetite, drinking and using the litterbox are all good signs.  Hopefully it's just the heat, but if so you'd think he'd stay in the room with the a/c.
