I recently adopted an 11-year old cat whose previous owner decided she no longer wanted her. The cat has always been indoor only and from what the previous owner told me has only had a few vaccinations including the Rabies Vaccination a few years ago.

I'm uncertain if this means that the cat needs a new vaccination. I am taking her to the Vet soon and wanted to know what the opinions were on the Rabies Vaccination as I've read different things... some saying if she's indoor not to bother to others stating to make sure if I give her the Rabies shot to make sure it doesn't have Adjuvants and some saying that using the Purevax is just as risky because it requires more frequent shots which can open the door to other issues.

This is my first time having a cat so I'm uncertain as to what to do.

Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated.

My two only got it because I needed passports for them. If she's going to be an indoor cat it's probably unnecessary but do check with your vet.

And thank you for adopting, welcome to the world of being owned by cats.

The important thing here is whether your city or county require it. You can call Animal Control or your local government to find out. Most of them do require rabies vaccinations, and although she will be an indoor cat, she can still get other diseases. Distemper is a good idea and you need a good flea topical. Flea topicals frequently include preventatives for ear mites, roundworms, and heart worms (40% of cats who get heart worms are strictly indoor cats). You need to discuss this with your vet, and have your cat vaccinated as well as you can.

Working with animals, vaccines that are a must for them are rabies vaccines. indoors or not, bats can get into a house and they carry rabies. Doesn't take much to protect you and your pets from rabies. Rabies is a HORRID virus that is just the worst for anything to suffer from.

Distemper is the other---call your local vet to see what vaccines are a must.
