Hay You All Hi

I have a question. And i had asked my vet when she had the birthing issue 5 years ago. which was a close call for her.

She was born back in 07 i think and she only had the 1 eye i guess after birth the mom had removed it because that was the way she was when i found her the the next morning i guess they were born sometime in the evening.

Well she's a good cat and i used to let her out up until she got knocked up and after the issue's with that and when i had taken her back their they gave her her shots after she over came her infection and fever.

I asked the vet if i should have the eye stitched up and they said no just keep it clean and she'll be fine. But i remember when i was a Kid we had a Kitten we later called Pirate because it got into a fight and the removed his eye but they closed it up after it stopped draining. So why would Micro's eye not require closing it up she's never had any issues with it but the vet did say i should watch out for insects getting in their and laying eggs. And now with this flea issue i wonder.

Also what would cause the hair from her belly to fall out it started maybe 3 years ago and i called the vet and they said as long as she eat as she normally does it's OK and that it could be stress and her over cleaning also at that time it was flea free here. Them *******s only came a month ago from a dead animal that i found in the basement.

Theirs no other animals around us just my German Shepard Rambo. in which she attacks but luckily Rambo doesn't harm her back he's a good Dog. Also i have no other neighbors near me for like 5 miles i live way out in the country so i don't understand how the fleas got here.

if you have any thoughts on the eye let me know i keep it clean but these fleas worry me.

Thanks Micro

Sorry to see you haven't had a reply sooner: Micro looks pretty cute there in your photo, and she has a lovely colour of fur.   If her eye doesn't bother her and doesn't get infections or anything then I'd go with what your vet says and let her be.

Fleas live outdoors and will survive on wild animals even if no one else is around and has pets.   They will jump on to anything they can feed on from the grass or undergrowth where they have dropped off their last host / feed.   Important thing when they have found their way on to one of your animals or in to your home is that you treat for them to prevent them getting hold.   The fleas can even come in on your clothing and then move on to the pets in your house so even if your cat is indoor only the fleas can come in on your or your dog.  Such a pain.

What a shame about the bald patch on Micro's belly - I can't see it in her photo but it is quite common I think.  It can happen if a cat has been bothered by itching skin from a bite or similar, or as your vet has said - from stress.  It can take a long time to grow back, but it is important to know that it can return.  A friend of mine took in a lovely little cat a while back and she had quite a big bald area on her belly.  It started to grow back a little late last year and I think her belly is now all nicely covered now.  I think that was down to stress but one of those things maybe no one will ever be certain about.  Main thing is keeping her as health as you can, checking for skin irritatants, treating for the fleas until they are clear, and continuing to offer her a safe home.

Sounds like you have a very patient dog there.

I am a human doctor, not a vet and any advice that I give should be checked with your vet.  However I agree with you that, from the photo, the eye lid seems to be well closed and  if there has never been any trouble, such as discharge, then one should leave well alone.  I cannot see how flies could lay eggs in the socket as they could not get there.

Micro looks to be  a beautiful cat.

With regards,

Geoffrey

I have a kitty who lost an eye to an untreated URI, and my vet said he wouldn't stitch it up :dk:. He says it needs to drain or something. Anyway I guess it's pretty normal not to stitch it up. At least she's black so you can't see anything in the empty socket, lol.

Stitching up the eyelids varies according to the circumstances        Poor Susie, my Burmese, came to me to tell me that there was something wrong.  It seemed that someone had shot her in the eye with an air-gun, or else thrown a stone and hit her eye.  In any case the eye ball was ruptured.  The vet took out the eye ball, but there was no infection so he stitched it up. He told me that he would have left it open  to drain if there was any chance of infection. Her eye did very well until she died of kidney failure about five years later.

Best wishes,

Geoffrey
