Recently found an orange cat in a very rural town. According to residents, the owner died, and the family just left the cat(who was an indoor animal)outside. I hate that people are not responsible and just abandon animals. Anyway, from what I've been told he/she has been living outside for two years now. Is it better to let this cat continue living outside or should I try to get him into a carrier and take him/herto a shelter? Apparently some of the residents feed him, but I hate to think about him/her not having a place to go to get out of the heat, cold, and away from predators. Every time I see him outside it just breaks my heart, but I have three animals and can't afford to add another one. Any suggestions or advice would be helpful. I've even tried a few rescue groups but no one will answer the phone or my e-mails.

I should add that I did buy a shelter for the kitty but the cat doesn't use it(at least I don't think). I also believe that this is probably a neutered male cat, because I have spayed other strays in the same territory that were female. He lets me get close enough to pet him and feed him. I'd just like to know how to best help this cat. Thanks in advance.

If I were you, I would trap him or get him in a carrier, get him to the vet and bring him home.  It is amazing that the poor thing has survived all this time and its about time someone stepped up for him.  Kudos to you for wanting to help him.

He does need a vet check - for fleas and other parasites and to be sure he is neutered.  Give him his own room for a few weeks - to help him acclimate and become secure in the new surroundings.  He's been an inside-only cat, so I wouldn't be surprised if he adjusts quickly.  To be safe, use a little dirt on top of his litter or get some Dr. Elsey's (it has a smell that tells cats "go here!)

Spend s much time with him as you can.  If you have other pets, introduce them to him slowly.  He needs to feel safe and that will help.

Again, thank you for helping him.  Keep us posted!

Sometimes I am grateful I don't have magical powers.  There would be little piles of dust where people who abandoned or are cruel to animals used to be!

Honestly I did wonder how he has survived this long. I find it hard to believe that NOT ONE person has taken him in. I thought it might be cruel to take him from his "territory", as I've seen him sleeping in people's chairs and under benches. I don't even know if he would let me pick him up. He did let me put flea medicine on him so that's a plus, and he's on the heavier side so I know people feed him. Do you really think that he would adjust to being an inside cat? I have a large dog too and I don't know how the cat would react to her either. I'm going to see if he will let me put him in a carrier to at least get him checked out by the vet and have vaccinations done. Maybe then the vet can confirm or deny that he is a male. Lol. The Doctor Elsey's litter is fantastic. I use it for my two cats, but currently use the respiratory one. I think you're talking about Touch of the Outdoors? If I do keep him I'd have to be careful. I live in an HOA that limits you to three pets and I have nosey neighbors on the board. Anyway, thank you for your reply. I will keep you posted!

I believe the litter referred to above is Cat Attract.  Thank you for helping this cat!

I'm just glad that I can help. Here's to hoping that he doesn't go bonkers being inside after nearly two years being outdoors. Thank you for the litter name.
