I had to take my old dude in to the vet yesterday for an ear infection. While we were there, I once again brought up my concerns about him drinking so much water, and peeing like a cow (volume, not frequency). As the old saying goes, it sounds like a cow peeing on a flat rock when he gets in the litter box! My big concerns were kidney disease/issues, and his thyroid.
He had a thorough round of bloodwork back in April, I specifically asked for thyroid, everything....all was normal then.
We ran another BUN & creatinine yesterday and both were normal. Checked his glucose again, normal. The way he put it, he said all his bloodwork is unbelievably great for a 12 year old, and he can find nothing else going on. His urine tests are fine too.
The vet wants me to wait until after we stop his seasonal allergy med (Zyrtec) this fall and see if possibly the Zyrtec could be drying him out so bad it is making him drink more. I do know my husband says it makes his mouth and nasal passages dry. I personally can't take it (it knocks me out) so I don't know exactly how it makes a person or cat feel.
He has always been a big water drinker, and has always peed anywhere from 5-6 clumps per day. It is still about the same frequency, but the clumps are MASSIVE when I scoop them, sometimes if he goes in the same place the clump won't even fit through the top of the Litter Genie I use!!
Has anyone else had this issue with their cat on Zyrtec, or any other antihistamine that has a drying action?
