Should I neuter my kitten now or wait?

I thought I remember reading somewhere that kittens can be fixed after 8 weeks and 2.5 lbs, and no later than 6 months... My cat is now 4 months and 6 lbs. our family vet insisted that we should wait until 6 months to neuter him... But this is also the vet that offers to declaw and neuter cats as a package deal.. And he's done and said some other questionable things in the past so even though we go to him for the convenience, I don't like the guy.

I never had a male cat before and I'm worried about spraying and aggression. is it possible he would start spraying before 6 months? If he starts will he likely stop after getting neutered?

Kittens can be neutered or spayed as early as 12 weeks old. There isn't any reason to wait until 6 months old. Some vets do wait because they want the kitten to be closer to adult size but there is a chance of a cat starting to spray around then.

Are there any other vets in the area you could go to? Maybe even a low cost neuter / spay clinic if you qualify. If you don't like the current vet there is no reason at all to continue to take your cat to him. He may be convenient but if you don't like the services or bedside manner, take your business elsewhere.

There's no big hurry; males don't usually start spraying until after 8 months old. Just do it whenever you have the time to take him to the vet and care for him afterward. For owned cats I don't like to rush into it (shelter kittens of course ought to be altered before adoption), so I usually wait until 6 or 7 months to neuter males.

Females are a different matter. 14 weeks is best for a spay.

My opinion, he is 4 months and 6 lbs, do it now, no point in waiting really, I have this fear of a male cat spraying also, and while 4 months is too young to start this, soon enough those male hormones will be coming, I say go for it.
